Sedmnácté století je významné nejen z hlediska matematiky, ale i společenského vývoje v Evropě. Práce nabízí přehled o vývoji matematiky v Anglii v tomto období. Uvádím v ní pouze ty matematické objevy, které lze vztáhnout k dílu Isaaca Newtona. V první části se zabývám konstrukcí logaritmu Johnem Napierem, Henry Briggsem a Gregory Saint-Vincentem. Ve druhé části se věnuji metodám hledání tečen a kvadratur. Popisuji postupy Pierra Fermata, Johna Wallise a Isaaca Barrowa. V závěrečné třetí části ukazuji, jak výše uvedené objevy využil Isaac Newton k definování diferenciálního a integrálního počtu. Na tomto příkladu vývoje kalkulu lze demonstrovat, že historický přístup k matematice nabízí názorné propojení geometrie, algebry i matematické analýzy a může být využit ve výuce. This thesis offers an overview about development of mathematics in the seventeenth century England. I present only those mathematical discoveries, which were relevantfor the work of Isaac Newton. In the first part I show the construction of logarithms by John Napier, Henry Briggs and Gregory Saint-Vincent. The second part is dedicated to methods of tangents and quadrature. I describe works of Pierre Fermat, John Wallis and Isaac Barrow. In the third part is shown how Isaac Newton used the mentioned findings for the development of the calculus. I use this example to demonstrate, that historical approach offers an illustrative connection between geometry, algebra and mathematical analysis and can be used in teaching.
