Abstract: A review of three major topics connected with the investigation of evolutionary history of relict serpentine populations of Knautia arvensis (L.) COULTER is presented: (1) specific microevolutionary processes in serpentine areas (2) biological characteristics of the model group studied (K. arvensis) (3) advantages, limitations and possible practical use of methods proposed for elucidation of evolutionary history of K. arvensis. Some preliminary results are employed to demonstrate benefits of above discussed methods for the study.
