Sluch, společně se zrakem, patří k nejdůležitějším smyslům člověka. Každé dítě přichází na svět vybaveno smysly, jejichž pomocí se učí vnímat podněty a postupně chápat jejich význam. U sluchově postiženého dítěte chybí nebo je omezena část spektra představující zvukové podněty. Nedostatek vnímání a pochopení zvuku z okolí vede k ovlivnění rozvoje dítěte především ve verbální inteligenci, rozvoji řeči a v oblasti psychosociální. Proto je nutné, aby byla porucha sluchu co nejdříve diagnostikována a mohla být kompenzována buď pomocí sluchadel nebo kochleárních implantátů, je-li sluchová porucha závažnější. Z tohoto důvodu má novorozenecký screening sluchových vad významnou roli. V České republice se screening novorozenců neprovádí celoplošně {--} u všech narozených dětí, ale pouze u novorozenců rizikových. Výjimkou jsou garantované projekty v Praze, Brně a nově i v Českých Budějovicích. Hearing, like vision, is one of the most important human senses. Every child coming into this world is endowed with senses with the aid of which it learn to perceive stimuli and gradually comprehend their meaning. A child born with hearing impairment is deprived, wholly or partly, of the part of the spectrum of life experiences that derive from audial stimuli. This drawback in the ability to perceive and understand sounds around him affect the child{\crq}s development, especially in terms of verbal and speech development, and psychosocial aptitude. It is therefore necessary to diagnose hearing impairment as early as possible, so that it could be compensated by means of hearing aids or, in more severe cases, cochlear implants. For this reason, screening of newborn babies for hearing impairment plays a significant role. In the Czech Republic, there is no such screening conducted on national level with all newborns {--} only with risk-prone babies. The examination is done using TEOAE (transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions).
