Abstract: The goal of this study is to highlight importance of the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium that has substantial advantages over the aerobic oxidation of ammonium in a marine ecosystem, freshwater and man-made ecosystem. It has been shown, that anaerobic oxidation has considerable influence on the global nitrogen cycle. This process is also suitable to be used in removing excess ammonium from wastewater treatment plants.
