Rostliny aktivně reagují na podmínky okolního prostředí tak, aby docházelo k efektivnímu využívání všech dostupných zdrojů rostlinou a aby byla rostlina co nejodolnější vůči nepříznivým podmínkám, které mohou mít mnoho podob: zasolení půd, nedostatek vody, vysoké ozáření, vysoké nebo nízké teploty, nedostatek živin atd… Jednou z možných odpovědí na stres způsobený nedostatkem vody (DS) je i změna prostorového uspořádání kořenového systému (RSA). Jako výhodné v takové situaci bývá označováno "Steep, cheap and deep" uspořádání RSA. Kořeny rostou téměř kolmo na povrch půdy (steep). Levný růst (cheap) - většina zdrojů je věnována na růst do co největší hloubky (deep), rostliny vytváří kořeny s menším průměrem a velkým množstvím aerenchymu. Rostliny se touto modulací RSA snaží dosáhnout do hlubších vrstev půdy, kde se vyskytují větší zásoby vody a využívají k tomu celou řadu mechanismů. Další přestavba RSA reagující na DS tím, že směřuje růst kořene do míst s vyšší koncentrací vody se nazývá hydrotropismus. Klíčovou signální drahou aktivující celou řadu genů podílejících se na odpovědi rostliny na DS je signální dráha kyseliny abscisové (ABA). Rostliny mají také epigenetické mechanismy, pomocí kterých jsou schopny si zapamatovat, že už se s daným stresovým faktorem v minulosti setkaly a při pozdějším... Plants actively react to the environmental conditions in such a way that they can use their resources efficiently and be resistant to suboptimal living conditions (e.g., high salinity, drought stress, high radiation, extremely high or low temperatures, insufficient nutrients etc.). One of the responses to drought stress (DS) is change in root system architecture (RSA). Optimized shape of RSA during drought stress can be under some situations "Steep, cheap and deep" ideotype. Steep - the roots grow in an angle ideally perpendicular to the soil surface. Cheap - most of the resources are spent on growing deeper while having small diameter and lots of aerenchym tissue. Plants with this RSA modulation try to reach deeper parts of the soil with greater water reservoirs and to achieve this, they use a wide range of mechanisms. Another change in RSA in reaction to drought stress, which directs the root to areas with more water is called hydrotropism. The key signal pathway which activates a large variety of drought responsive genes is the abscisic acid (ABA) pathway. Plants also have epigenetic mechanisms, which by remembering a stress factor they have already encountered, are capable of faster and more intensive response.
