Katolická církev zintenzivněla po první světové válce svůj zájem o sekularizující se svět. Začala hledat nové strategie, jak se aktivně a tvůrčím způsobem zapojit do kulturního dění. Jednou z oblastí, ve které se tento trend jasně ukázal, se stala kinematografie. Již brzy po vynálezu kinematografu se mezi katolíky začaly objevovat nejrůznější nápady a plány, jak s filmem naložit. Zezdola vzniklým iniciativám následně papež požehnal a zahrnul je v encyklice Vigilanti Cura do svého plánu. Tato studie se snaží zorientovat čtenáře v pestré směsici zajímavých a často protichůdných hlasů a názorů, které směrem k filmu zaznívaly od českých katolíků. Katolické aktivity na poli filmu jsou rozděleny do tři základních oblastí: produkce, klasifikace a distribuce. Do první oblasti spadá snaha o výrobu vlastních katolických filmů. Problematika je v této studii demonstrována na příkladu peripetií doprovázejících natáčení filmu Svatý Václav a na následném vztahu katolíků k hotovému dílu. Klasifikace filmů z katolických pozic byla prováděna systematicky a koordinovaně. Studie se zabývá genezí katolických cenzurních institucí, smyslem cenzury a také vztahem české domácí praxe k zahraničí a k Vatikánu. Distribuce filmů probíhala především v rámci sítě orelských kin. After the First World War, the Catholic Church intensified its interest in a world that was becoming ever more secular and began to look for new means of actively and creatively taking part in cultural affairs. Cinematography was one of the areas in which this trend became most apparent. It was shortly after the invention of cinematograph that various ideas and plans regarding how to deal with film began to emerge among Catholics. Consequently, the Pope gave his blessing to community-based initiatives and included them in his plan in the encyclical Vigilanti Cura. This study seeks to familiarise the reader with a multifarious mixture of interesting, and often contradictory, voices and opinions that were heard from Czech Catholics with regard to film. Catholic activities in the field of film are divided into three basic areas: production, classification and distribution, with the first area concerning the effort to make their own Catholic films. This study demonstrates the problems faced in this endeavour by presenting the difficulties in the making of the film Saint Wenceslas and the consequent relationship of Catholics to the completed work.
