Abstract: Adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) and their receptors (AKH-Rs) are involved in the control of the physiological functions in insect such as regulation of metabolic response to stress conditions and mobilization of energy stores. Bommo-AKH (AKH2) and Bombyx AKH-R in silkworm Bombyx mori were localized by immunohistochemical methods in the central nervous system (CNS) of larvae and adults. Both the hormone and the receptor immunoreactivity were found in the corpora cardiaca and in two neurons within each brain hemisphere, one located in the dorsolateral protocerebrum and the second one in the ventrolateral deutocerebrum. The later contains both the hormone and the receptor immunoreactivity. Furthermore, the receptor immunoreactivity was detected in two paired neurons located in the subesophageal ganglion. In larvae, a bilateral pair of longitudinal nerves extending from the brain to the ventral nerve cord was detected. Colocalization of the hormone and receptor immunoreactivity suggests a possible autoregulatory function.
