Etnografický zájem o diverzitu svatebních obřadů a obyčejů u různých etnik a teritorií světa souvisí úzce s rozvojem mořeplavby v raném novověku. O souhrnné pojednání se jako první pokusil F.J.Rottmann ve spisku Rituale nupturientium (vyšlo 1715 v Brémách) Originations of etnographic interest in wedding rituals The growth of etnographic interest in the diversity of wedding rituals and customs of different ethnics and of different teritories of the world is closely connected to the development of sea sailing in the early Modern Period. F.J.Rottmann was the first to write a summary review about this topic in his "Rituale nupturientium" (published in 1715, Bremen)
