Práce nejprve v úvodní kapitole definuje pojmy dekadence a umění pro umění v britské literatuře konce 19. století a dále stručně zmíní životopisná fakta obou autorů, která se vztahují k jejich literárnímu odkazu. Na základě odborné literatury se práce pokusí o analýzu projevů chování a základních rysů rozdvojené osobnosti. Teoretické poznatky pak budou využity v literárněvědné analýze románů O. Wilda Obraz Doriana Graye a R. L. Stevensona Podivný případ doktora Jekylla a pana Hyda s ohledem na charakteristiku hrdinů včetně motivace jejich chování ve vztahu ke společnosti. Práce by měla zhodnotit i symboliku a alegorickou rovinu obou románů v kontextu pozdní viktoriánské doby. In the introductory chapter, the thesis will define the terms decadence and Art for Art´s sake in the 19th century British literature. Then it will briefly describe the biographies of both authors which relate to their literary legacy. On the grounds of the secondary literature the thesis will try to analyse the manifestations and the characteristic traits of dualism. The theoretical findings will be used in the analysis of Oscar Wilde´s The Picture of Dorian Gray and R. L. Stevenson´s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with regard to the heroes´ characteristics including the motivation for their behaviour in relation to society. The thesis will also take into consideration symbolism and allegory of both novels in the context of Late Victorian Period.
