Modern symmetry group theory provides constructive procedures for finding similarity transformations and invariants, leading to fundamental change in the similarity solutions of shear flows, based so far on inspection analysis, ad hoc assumptions, and physical considerations. The new approach is here demonstrated on classical Stokes' (1851) problem of the suddenly accelerated flow above a stationary flat plate, with the gradual growth of boundary layer thickness. Moderní teorie grup symetrií podává konstruktivní přístup k problému určení similaritních transformací a invariantů, což vede k podstatné změně v otázce similaritních řešení smykových proudění, doposud založených na inspekční analýze, různých ad hoc předpokladech a fyzikálních úvahách. V příspěvku je novy přístup demonstrován na klasickém Stokesove problému (z r. 1851) náhle urychleného proudění nad stacionární rovinnou stěnou s postupným růstem tloušťky mezné vrstvy.
