Tato práce se snaží podat komplexní charakteristiku pinyinu a určit jeho roli v čínské společnosti. Nejdříve je zkoumán obsah termínu pinyin z jazykového hlediska. V dalších dvou kapitolách je shrnut historický vývoj fonetizace a postojů veřejnosti, vlády i odborníků k fonetizaci čínštiny, dále pak vznik pinyinu až do jeho zakotvení v Zákoně o standardním jazyce ČLR. Následující tři kapitoly popisují pinyin v jeho zákonem předepsaných funkcích, a sice ve výuce čínštiny, jakožto romanizace čínštiny a jako alternativy a doplňku ke znakovému písmu. Poslední kapitola se krátce věnuje postoji dnešních běžných uživatelů jazyka k pinyinu a fenoménu digrafie v čínštině. First, the term pinyin is examined from the linguistic perspective. Following is the overview of historical development of phonetisation of Chinese language and the attitudes of Chinese public, government, and linguists, as well as the origins of pinyin itself until its embedment in the Law on Common Language of P. R. C. Next three chapters map pinyin's officially recognised functions, namely in Chinese language education, as a romanisation system, and as an alternative or a complementary system to Chinese character script. The last chapter briefly describes the attitudes of common users of language toward pinyin and the realisation of digraphia in China.
