Abstrakt: This paper deals with the detection of aromatic hydrocarbons in air or water which is based on refractive-index changes of a silica xerogel detection layer applied on silica optical fiber. The fiber is excited by an inclined collimated beam. The sensitivity of the tetraethoxysilane- and methyltriethoxysilane- based xerogel layers to benzene and toluene in air and in liquid water are presented. The detection limits were about 500 and 5 ppm for air and water, respectively.
