Abstract: A harmonically excited oscillator having one degree of freedom with soft stop is analysed. The soft stop is modelled by piecewise linear spring and damping characteristics proportional to the stop deformation. The regions of different types of motion chacterised by the impact number are determined by numerical simulation for several alternatives of stop stiffness.
