Předkládaná disertace se zabývá taxonomickou diverzitou a fylogenezí medvědovitých (Mammalia, Ursidae) a otázkami vlivu měnících se teoretických a metodických konceptů v taxonomii na její praktické uskutečňování a naopak. Tato otázka je řešena z různých pohledů. Podávám kritický přehled názorů na druhovou a infraspecifickou klasifikaci u medvědovitých od r 1758 po současnost a zabývám se vzájemným ovlivňováním této klasifikace a teoretického konceptu druhu platného v daném období. Praktická část je prezentována studiemi taxonomického a fyletického postavení vybraných druhů medvědů od pliocénu po střední pleistocén, založených na studiu fosilního dentálního materiálu. Výsledkem těchto studií je, vedle revize některých tradičních taxonomických konceptů, také model popisující druhovou diverzifikaci u ursinních medvědů. V předevolučním období byly druhy medvědů chápány jako přirozené neměnné taxony. Byly chápany většinou poměrně široce a jejich vnitrodruhová variabilita byla popisována pomocí variet (ty většinou nelze jednoznačně identifikovat s poddruhy či infrasubspecifickými taxony tak, jak je chápeme dnes), které však byly považovány za kvalitativně odlišné od druhu. V post-Darwinovském období se koncept druhu příliš nemění (přinejmenším v synchronním pohledu). Významnou změnu však prodělal koncept... The present thesis surveys topic of taxonomic diversity and phylogeny of bears (Mammalia, Ursidae) and aspects of its contextual setting under effects of changing conceptual and methodological viewpoints. This problem is studied from several perspectives. The historical perspective is represented by a critical overview of the history of specific and infraspecific classification of bears with special respect to mutual influences of this classification and theoretical concepts of species accepted in particular periods. The perspective of material approach is exemplified by a material-based study of taxonomical and phyletic status of selected Pliocene to Middle Pleistocene ursine taxa. Along with deconstruction of some traditional hypotheses this produced a model explaining species diversification in ursine bears and its discussion in terms of factual relevance of included background concepts. In the pre-evolutionary period the bear species were usually understood broadly, as incipient immanent entities, yet exhibiting obvious certain infraspecific variability. This was established using definitions of varieties (mostly not identifiable with present subspecies or infraspecific taxa) considered as unstable modes of particular species.
