Abstract: Several different types of intermediate layers between the polycarbonate substrate and the plasma deposited hard SiOx-like protective coating have been studied. By the help of an optimized fracture resistant intermediate multilayer system and hard SiOx-like protective coating the original PC surface hardness was increased by almost two orders of magnitude.
