Urban development is a dynamic process which should react to the needs of society. In the context of economic, demographic and social changes in post-industrial city is emerging the need for new approaches to planning public spaces. The paper deals with potentials of vegetation in the context of sustainable development of urban environment. Urban green is gaining more attention not only in the context of global climate changes, but also for its ability to enhance attractiveness of space and strengthen its identity. Vacant lots in the urban fabric mean opportunities and challenges for green space development. Against this backdrop the question is whether the influence, significance and usage of green spaces will change andwhether these changes will affect urban planning. Urbanizačný proces je dynamický a mal by reagovat' na potreby spoločnosti. V súvislosti s ekonomickými, demografickými a sociálnymi zmenami v postindustriálnom meste sa objavuje potreba nových prístupov k plánovaniu verejných priestorov. Príspevok sa zaoberá potenciálom zelene a krajinných prvkov v kontexte udržatelného rozvoja mestského prostredia. Urbánna vegetácia získava čoraz väčšiu pozornost' nielen v súvislosti globálnych klimatických zmien, ale tiež pre jej schopnost' zatraktívnit' prostredie a posilnit' jeho identitu. Nevyužité priestory v mestskej štruktúre znamenajú príležitost' a výzvu pre rozvoj zelených plôch. V tejto súvislosti je otázkou, či sa pôsobenie, význam a spôsob využívania zelene v mestskom prostredí bude menit', a aký vplyv budú mat' tieto zmeny na územnéplánovanie.
