Po období "Pražského jara" 1968 a po sovětské okupaci přišlo období normalizace. Tou se rozumí obnova totalitního režimu padesátých let a jeho ideologie. Režim musel nejprve eliminovat demokractické síly a potom, podle charakteristiky Hannah Arendtové pro totalitní režimy, eliminovat "nepoužitelné a nepotřebné". By the "proces of normalization" is meant the gradual restauration of the Czechoslovak totaliarian régimé of the fifties. According to Hannah Arendt, the fundamental feature of totalitarian régimes is the elimination of those who are "useless and unneeded".
