Finsko muselo vzhledem ke komplikované poloze mezi Východem a Západem ve své historii čelit řadě komplikovaných situací. Po získání své nezávislosti v roce 1917 se Finsko rozhodlo zavázat k politice neutrality, aby předešlo možným komplikacím. Po druhé světové válce se Finsko ocitlo de facto v pozici poraženého státu. Finsko bylo spojencem Německa, a proto se se (mimo jiné) stalo poraženým státem. Finsko tedy bylo de facto donuceno podepsat Smlouvu o přátelství, spolupráci a vzájemné pomoci se SSSR. Pro Finsko nastalo období tzv. finlandizace, kdy SSSR intervenoval především do finské zahraniční politiky, a to ve velké míře uzavřelo Finsku spolupráci se Západem. Finsko se v tomto období snažilo fungovat jako "prostředník" mezi Východem a Západem. Po pádu Sovětského svazu a následném vstupu Finska do EU nastala zcela nová situace. Finsko bylo až do roku 2004 jediným státem EU, který měl společné hranice s Ruskem. Práce si klade za cíl zjistit, zda se vstupem Finska do EU vzhledem k výše zmiňovaným skutečnostem změnil charakter finsko-ruských vztahů. Due to its complicated position between East and West Finland had to face a number of complicated situations in its history. After the gain of independence in 1917, Finland decided to commit to a policy of neutrality in order to avoid possible complications. After the Second World War, Finland was among vanquished nations. Finland used to be an ally of Germany, and also because of it and other things Finland was among vanquished nations. Finland was de facto forced to sign The Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and The Republic of Finland. Finland experienced a period called Finlandisation, when the USSR intervened mainly in Finnish foreign affairs policy which largely limited Finnish cooperation with the West. Finland tried to act as a "mediator" between East and West in this period. Entirely new situation occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union and the subsequent entry of Finland to the EU. Until 2004 Finland was the only EU country that had a common border with Russia. This work aims to determine whether the Finnish entry to the EU has changed the character of the Finnish-Russian relations due to the above mentioned facts.
