The theme of this work is to analyze and compare the Czech capital market with equity markets in the U.S., Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary in the period 1990 - 2009. The main aim was to compare the development of the Prague Stock Exchange with exchanges of developed countries (U.S., Germany, Austria) and exchanges of the former centrally planned economies (Poland, Hungary). The first chapter discusses the importance of capital market as a system and the most considerable historical milestones of its development in each country. Subsequent chapters deal with selected markets from the perspective of the IPO, market capitalization and subject of trade. This thesis aims to provide an answer to the question of what position Prague Stock Exchange was able to take during the twenty years of its existence and what succesful it was as compared to the competing markets. Tématem této práce je analýza a porovnání českého kapitálového trhu s kapitálovými trhy v USA, Německu, Rakousku, Polsku a Maďarsku v periodě 1990 -- 2009. Cílem bylo srovnat vývoj Burzy cenných papírů Praha a.s. s burzami vyspělých státu (USA, Německo, Rakousko) a burzami ekonomik bývalého centrálního plánování (Polsko, Maďarsko). První kapitola pojednává o významu kapitálového trhu jako systému a nejdůležitějších historických milnících jeho vývoje u jednotlivých států. Následující kapitoly se zabývají vybranými trhy z pohledu IPO, tržní kapitalizace a předmětu obchodování. Práce se snaží poskytnout odpověď na otázku, jakou pozici si dovedla pražská burza během dvaceti let své existence vydobýt a jak je na tom v porovnání s konkurenčními trhy.
