Plynové krize z roku 2006 a především z ledna roku 2009 ukázaly potřebu diverzifikace energetických tras do Evropské unie, jelikož v případě uzavření plynovodu na Ukrajinu dojde k odříznutí většiny Evropské unie od dodávek plynu. Prioritou není snížení závislosti na Rusku, nýbrž upevnění vztahů, což je prospěšné pro obě strany, neboť jejich závislost je vzájemná, nikoli jednostranná. Pro posílení energetické bezpečnosti Evropské unie vzniká několik projektů - nových plynovodů (Nord Stream, South Stream, Nabucco), a dochází ke zefektivňování dovozu LNG. Gas Crisis in 2006 and especially in January 2009 showed the need of diversification of the energy routes to the European Union, in a case that a gas pipeline to Ukraine is cut off, most of the European Union's Member States will suffer from the lack of gas. The priority is not to reduce dependence on Russia but it is the consolidation of relations which is beneficial to both parties because the relationship is reciprocal rather than unilateral. To strengthen the energy security of the European Union there is a number of projects - new pipelines (Nord Stream, South Stream, Nabucco), and the import of LNG is being improved.
