Vo svojej práci charakterizujem vývoj amerických železníc od ich vzniku v 19. storočí až do dnešnej doby. Podrobne sa venujem súčasným trendom v oblasti železničnej nákladnej dopravy, konkrétne infraštruktúre, stavu na súčasnom trhu, bezpečnosti a vzťahu k životnému prostrediu. V druhej polovici práce podrobím analýze dve veľké spoločnosti -- Union Pacific a Norfolk Southern, zhodnotím ich vývoj, portfólio činností, vozový park a ekonomickú situáciu. Záverom sa pokúsim zhrnúť a zdôvodniť ako vývoj tak aj súčasnú situáciu na americkom trhu a tiež zosumarizujem podstatné zaujímavosti a odlišnosti americkej železničnej nákladnej dopravy. Ve své práci chci charakterizovat vývoj amerických železnic od jejich vzniku v 19. století až do dnešní doby. Podrobně se věnuji současným trendům v oblasti železniční nákladní dopravy, konkrétně infrastruktuře, stavu na současném trhu, bezpečnosti a vztahu k životnímu prostředí. V druhé polovině práce podrobím analýze dvě velké společnosti - Union Pacific a Norfolk Southern, zhodnotím jejich vývoj, portfolio činností, vozový park a ekonomickou situaci. Závěrem se pokusím shrnout a zdůvodnit jako vývoj, tak současnou situaci na americkém trhu a také sumarizovat podstatné zajímavosti a odlišnosti americké nákladní železniční dopravy. In this bachelor thesis, I am going to characterize the evolution of rail transport in the USA since the very beginning in the 19th century until nowadays. In particular, I want to write about current trends in freight rail transport, infrastructure, situation on the American market, safety and also about the relationship with environment. In the second party, I am going to analyze two major companies on the market -- Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. To be more precise, I would like to review their history, portfolio of the commodities they transport, locomotive and car rosters and economic situation. In the final conclusion, I sum up the current situation in the USA, concerning the most significant and typical characteristics of the rail freight transport and the differences between the USA and the Europe.
