This theses deals with a specific type of contemporary Czech drama, the so-called
"Czech coolness drama". The main question discussed is whether it can really be
labeled "coolness" as known abroad or not. The history and the features of coolness
drama abroad are stated in the beginning (above all based on Aleks Sierz's, Ken
Urban's, and other studies published in the magazine World and Theatre). However,
a comprehensive study of Czech coolness drama is lacking. Thus, the thesis stems
mainly from the author's judgement based on the analyses of three Czech plays,
which may be categorized as coolness drama for various reasons ? Jiří Pokorný's
Odpočívej v pokoji, Marek Horoščák's Vařený hlavy, and Jáchym Topol's Cesta do
Bulgumy. These plays are then compared with the features of coolness drama
abroad. On grounds of these analyses, we can argue these three conclusions:
Odpočívej v pokoji can be regarded as coolness drama, yet it does not attain the
required function. Vařený hlavy by no means should be categorized as coolness
drama. Cesta do Bugulmy is classified as a coolness, however, not coolness drama.
Therefore, no such drama has emerged in the Czech Republic (yet)
