Abstract: Previous work studying the antipredator behaviour of Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) suggest that the size of the predator is one of the crucial factors influencing the use of active during the nest defence. In this study, I tested the effect of predator?s body size using three plush dummies of Jay (Garrulus glandarius): normal-sized (30 cm), crow-sized (40 cm) and raven-sized (50 cm). Two stuffed dummies ? the Jay and Domestic Pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica) were used as controls. I found the size of the predator to be a significant factor, influencing the intensity of active mobbing, particularly the most risky action ? swoops with physical contact. I discuss the decline of active defence against the biggest Jay dummy was caused by fear of adult defenders, not by resignation to vain effort for expel too big (heavy) intruder.
