Population viability analysis of endangered species in Czech Republic
Šťastná, Andrea ; Helman, Karel (advisor) ; Bašta, Milan (referee)
Diploma thesis analyzes the viability of the selected species populations in the Czech Republic. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part contains a stochastic model simulating possible scenarios of the Eurasian lynx population size in the Czech Republic. For this model program Vortex was used. The second part is focused on Time series analysis of the Grey Partridge and the Common Kingfisher population, where data was obtained from the Czech Society for Ornithology. This analysis aims on identification of factors that may affect the viability of the two bird species.
Diversity and taxonomy of Steccherinum in the Czech Republic
Geigerová, Tereza ; Koukol, Ondřej (advisor) ; Borovička, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with geographical distribution and taxonomy of Steccherinum genus in the Czech Republic. Members of this genus are corticioid fungi of Meruliaceae family, characterized by odontioid hymenophore, small spores and encrusted pseudocystidia. Presence of nine species was confirmed in Czech Republic on the basis of herbarium specimen revision and study of my own collections. Analysis of ITS and LSU nrDNA gene regions was used to create phylogenetic trees. These trees show relations in Steccherinum genus and related species. Selected traits in specimens of S. ochraceum s. l. (number of spines, their length, spore size and pseudocystidia size) were measured. This was followed by investigation of morphological variability in individual specimens and in relationship to ecological conditions (substrate and elevation). Morphology of selected individuals was compared with molecular data afterwards. Two clades were defined in S. ochraceum s. l. - existing differences between them are presumably caused by intraspecific genetic variability. S. rhois could not be separated as individual species on the basis of phylogenetic analysis. Dependence of fruiting body morphology on ecological conditions wasn't supported by results. Maps of geographic distribution of individual species of Steccherinum genus are...
Human preference to animal species and its impact on species conservation
Marešová, Jana ; Frynta, Daniel (advisor) ; Komárek, Stanislav (referee) ; Sedláček, František (referee)
The dissertation thesis deals with human aesthetic preference to other species and its anthropological and conservation aspect. The aesthetic preference to animal species has rarely been systematically studied before and quantitative analyses, especially on a fine taxonomic scale did not exist. On the other hand, it was known that attractive species often receive more support for their conservation. From these simple facts rose the idea to test human aesthetic preference to snake species (and consequently to species across major vertebrate taxa) and use this quantified preference to explain the conservation effort devoted to captive breeding worldwide (measured as size of zoo populations). We confirmed that the perceived attractiveness (preference and/or species' body size) succesfully predicts the size of zoo populations across mammal, bird and reptile taxa. On contrary, we found no effect of the IUCN listing of the species. To find out whether we work with Czech students' preference only or we may generalize to other populations, we carried out the same experiment to determine human preference to boas and pythons in eight cultures of five continents. Despite profound differences of the studied ethnics, we revealed a considerable agreement. Moreover, we found an agreement between pre-school...
Commented translation: Petit atlas des especes menacées (Yves Sciama, Petite encyclopédie Larousse, Paris 2003, str. 96-119)
Sýkorová, Eliška ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
This translation bachelor thesis consists of a practical and a theoretical part. The practical part is the translation of a chosen chapter from the book Petit Atlas des Espces Menacées, written by a French biologist and publicist Yves Sciama. The theoretical one is a commentary on the translation which engages in analysis of the original text - it studies the character of the author, the intended reader, the edition in which the book was released, etc. Next the commentary describes the typology of translational problems on the lexical, syntactic, stylistic, grammatical, and text level. It is followed by a discussion over the method of translation and characteristics of the used translational techniques (transposition, modulation, concentration) supported by concrete examples. It is concluded by a description of graphical design of the text.
The effect of different management strategies on the dynamics of saproxylic insect habitats
ŠEBEK, Pavel
The thesis concerns studies on habitats utilized by insects associated with deadwood. It presents a review of current issues in the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity. The effects of active intervention on temperate lowland woodland habitats, such as pollarding or coppicing, are evaluated in terms of their suitability for saproxylic communities and other groups. Further, the importance of open-grown trees for saproxylic diversity is assessed.
Floristic survey of natural monument Vinice (Příbram district)
Ambrožová, Veronika ; Česká, Jana (advisor) ; Petrů, Veronika (referee)
Floristic survey of the natural monument Vinice (district Příbram) was conducted during growing seasons in 2012 and 2015. The study area is located near Jince and it is important paleontological deposit of Cambrian fauna. The aim of this thesis was a floristic inventory of vascular plant species, with a focus on validation of endangered and exotic species occurrence. The thesis also includes an evaluation of previous work results and current treatment interventions in context with the management plan. In the natural monument Vinice, there were 61 vascular plant species inventoried on selected parts of the monitored area in 2015 (in 2012, there were 47 plans species determined, excluding families Poaceae, Juncaceae and Cyperaceae). Presence of two endangered species was confirmed in both years, while another three previously recorded (in year 2006) endangered species were not found at the study area in 2015. Five alien species were recorded in 2015, of which the black locust (Robinia pseudacacia) and small balsam (Impatiens parviflora) are invasive nature. Potential threat to the locality can be common broom (Cytisus scoparius), although it is not considered as an invasive species in the Czech Republic. On the basis of floristic inventories four main habitats were indicatively set (Hercynian oak - hornbeam forests, herb-rich beech forests, acidophilous thermophilous oak forests and dry acidophilous oak forests). To preserve this valuable paleontological and also botanical site is recommended to follow the management plan for the period 2007-2016, where the appropriate interventions are described. The new management plan should emphasize the protection of paleontological deposits and the liquidation of alien species populations (including common broom) especially on rock terraces with thermophilic vegetation.
Landuse efects on the temperature regime of streams with focus on the habitat conditions for Margaritifera margaritifera
Skála, Miroslav ; Douda, Karel (advisor) ; Matasová, Klára (referee)
Landuse efects on the temperature regime of streams with focus on the habitat conditions for Margaritifera margaritifera Summary This bachelor thesis deals with the matter of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera). It will describe the main factors affecting its reproduction and presence in the watercourse - the fresh pearl mussel is to be found among the endangered species and its presence and survival in a certain location depend primarily on the hosting fish which is the brown trout here in the Czech Republic. Generally, the main stress lays on the temperature and its influence on the ecology of the freshwater pearl mussel. This thesis contains a research part which describes the freshwater pearl mussel and impacts on it, and a practical part where you can find an assessment of the temperature and qualitative impact on growth and death of the freshwater pearl mussel during bioindications. The temperature influences all age stages of the freshwater pearl mussel. The temperature changes thanks to a variety of different aspects such as surrounding flora in the watercourse, atmospherical factors, anthropogenic activity or altitude. You will be able to find all these aspects along with a percentage of their potential effect on the freshwater pearl mussel in this thesis as well as the assessment of the average summer temperature and its possible impact on any specimen of any stage. The thesis is also based on the impact of surroundings on the freshwater pearl mussel which are discovered during bioindications that are also described here and have been partially used in the appraisal. The practical part of the thesis is focused on the growth and death of the species in the bioindication in five profiles of the watercourse. The third part of the practical thesis is about locations that show surroundings and representation stated components. The reason I included this part is mostly for illustrative purposes which serve to expound the matter to the reader. The used data of components in the locations are from 2012.
