The Phenomenon of Cross-dressing in Czech Cinema
Chaloupková, Petra ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Czesany Dvořáková, Tereza (referee)
This thesis aims to address the forms of crossdressing appearing in Czech post- revolutionary cinema, and moreover, to approach images of the abovementioned cultural practice as a potential space for a subversion of the cisheteronormative system. At the same time, such portrayal of crossdressing can be percieved as an opportunity to strengthen existing gender norms. With the help of film analyses led by the thoughts coming from the gender studies, and with the usage of queer methodological tools, the text deals with the mechanisms of preventing the invasion of queerness, of regulating subversive activities, as well as of functional strategies for resisting the normative order. Lastly, it offers a typological breakdown of seven chosen feature films that are integrating the crossdressing element, and it evaluates them according to their openness to queer reading and the amount of freedom, which is granted to their gender-nonconforming characters. KEY WORDS Crossdressing, gender identity, transgender, queer, transition, disguise, femininity, masculinity
Interface, Control and Visual Culture: Distracted Attention in the Internet Era
Jurenka, Adam ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Anger, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor's thesis is based on various theoretical approaches, the contact point of which is tried to be found precisely in their relation to attention, and especially then to various forms and processes of its distraction. It examines these processes in their broader historical and sociocultural context, mainly in relation to the processes of modernization, digitization, commodification and articulation of normativity. The first part of the work is mainly defined by two philosophical lines: the concept of rhizome by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as an acentric, variable system, on the basis of which the work tries to outline the ontology of global attention; and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction as a model for deconstructing the polar opposition between attention and distraction. The second part of the work tries to build on this game between attention and distraction, and to reconsider the concept of the attention economy in the context of contemporary visual culture. The theoretical terrain here is much more diffuse: the main lines explore the relationship between technology and man, the globalization of media and neoliberal ideologies of control, progress and productivity. Using examples from visual culture, they try to show how these relations shape patterns of attention, and especially...
Freedom to Images! Between Reality, Imagination and Memory in Film and Moving Image in Contemporary Czech Art
Jiránková, Klára ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Purkrábková, Noemi (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the examination, mapping and reflection of mutual relations between film/moving image, imagination and memory in the field of contemporary Czech visual arts. It is primarily based on two impulses that are closely connected to each other and represent events that are quite common today, but still little reflected in the context of Czech art and film theory and criticism. The first of them is the relocation of films and moving images, which represent a variety of technical scenes of an experimental nature or different materiality (video, digital images, computer graphics), into the spaces of galleries and exhibition halls. The second impulse is the convergence of fine art and film/moving image, which is closely related to this particular relocation. The text tries to point out the importance and essentiality of the fusion of these two spheres as well as the relocation of film/moving images into gallery spaces. Above all, it is concerned with presenting the fact of the fundamental transformation taking place in our everyday perceptual experience with given media thanks to the aforementined movements and convergences. Furthermore, it also strives for a detailed examination of the form of our memory and imagination, which are also strongly influenced and constructed, as...
Roger Deakins: Analysis od Cinematographers's Style
Špuláková, Valerie ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Přádná, Stanislava (referee)
This bachelor thesis concerns the cinematography style of Roger Deakins. The aim is to describe and understand his work methods and philosophy regarding the profession. In the first part, the text expounds upon the work of cinematographers in general, and attempts to identify the elements that cinematographers contribute to the collaborative process of filmmaking. The following section features an analysis of the film Prisoners (2013) using neoformalistic principles. Then, the conclusions of this analysis were compared to the visuals of films (Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) created in a Deakins collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve. Next is a comparison of camera elements found in the Deakins-Villeneuve works in contrast with Deakins' cooperation with directors: Sam Mendes, Andrew Niccol, & John Crowley. The thesis' methodology highlighted camera elements which could be described as part of Deakins' camera style. Lastly, a comparison and contextualisation of the results of the latter analysis with what Deakins says about his work in his podcast and in interviews. Key words Cinematographer, Roger Deakins, Denis Villeneuve, Prisoners, cinematography style analysis
Contact, Conflict, Transformation. Poets as Filmmakers, a Comparative Analysis.
Pololáníková, Hana ; Česálková, Lucie (advisor) ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (referee)
The bachelor thesis examines the film medium as a tool of poets when expanding or sharing their work. Terms such as 'poetic film', 'film poetry' or 'videopoetry' can be understood as a broad meaning for works that are both narrative and use a specific poetic aesthetic, or experimental, performative and rhythmic works, or works which arise as remediation of a literary poem. The study deals with several contemporary authors who are primarily active or established as writers and poets and decided to develop their texts further through a moving image. To the question of the interaction between the text of the poem and the moving image in a poetic film, we will look for answers through a comparative analysis of short films by a total of eight contemporary European poets. Similarly, the theoretical basis of the work is being taken over mainly from contemporary authors in the field of film- and literary studies. Firstly, we will summarize the basic knowledge from research on the concept of a poetic film and the historical development of the genre. Then also the topics of amateur work, the concept of the poetic function of Roman Jakobson and the properties of writing as a medium follow. In the comparative analysis, the films are divided into categories in which we observe the contact of the original poetic...
It's a boy! (Not only) the gender issue of the ways childbirth is shown in film
Černá, Natálie ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Přádná, Stanislava (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the depiction of birthing woman in film through the perspective of gender and feminist theories. The first part makes the reader familiar with the history of obstetrics in relation to the issues of gender. It sketches a parallel between the social roots of obstetrics and impulses for the first feminist movement. In the second part the thesis looks closer into the constructive and performative nature of gender and gender roles and most importantly it deals with benefits and pitfalls of motherhood according to feminist theoreticians. For this purpose, it introduces selected concepts of Shulamith Firestone, Adrienne Rich and Julia Kristeva. The third part analyses potential reasons, why the portrayal of childbirth has been historically pushed aside and why, as a consequence, there is no female childbirth narrative, which would equip women with means to express their experience. The fourth part seeks this missing narrative in particular examples among nonfiction as well as fiction works from contemporary cinema as well as from from its history.

Future families in the past tense: strategies of using home movies in documentary films
Rezková, Hana ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (referee)
Synopsis This thesis aims to define the basic strategies used to tackle and process home movie footage in compilation documentary films by Péter Forgács, Jan Šikl and Marek Šulík. It also aims to outline how these strategies influence and regulate the ways the historical period in question is communicated in these films. The source material of the home movie will first be discussed in its original family context as the product of a specific media memory practice that at the same time determines the rhetoric and aesthetics of this material. In the second part, the thesis will focus on two basic strategies for the use of home movie footage in these films. While the first strategy uses home movies to thematize and problematize the possibilities of historical representation, the second one exploits the mode of authenticity and strong affective potential of the home movie to block out active viewer engagement.
Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor
Součková, Štěpánka ; Hanáková, Petra (advisor) ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.
The Phenomenon of Zombies in Films by George A. Romero
Čada Wernischová, Nelly ; Čeněk, David (advisor) ; Svatoňová, Kateřina (referee)
(in English) This work deals with the phenomenon of zombie in films by George A. Romero. Its objective is to prove that, although the characteristics of the phenomenon underwent significant change within individual films by this director, it still preserved the basic metaphoric function it had already at the time of its origination in Haiti in the 17th century. . The analytical part, in which three selected zombie horrors by George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead) are discussed, is based on the methods of neoformalist analysis. Based on the analysis of individual films, I have proved that the zombie phenomenon in Romero's films works, the same as it does in Haiti, as a metaphor of slavery with this metaphor being varied depending on the issues that become the current topic of each of the films whose actual aim is to criticise the contemporary society.
