Methodology of participatory assessment of ecosystem services and their future scenarios in specially protected areas

The aim of the methodology is to integrate ecosystem service assessment procedures into the processes of protection and management of specially protected areas. In particular, it is about expanding the assessment of ecosystem services of specially protected areas by the dimension of the involvement of local actors in the process of mapping and modeling ecosystem services. The methodology introduces procedures for participatory identification of benefits and values of nature, participatory creation of future development scenarios and participatory mapping and modeling of ecosystem services. These practices improve understanding and communication of the benefits and values of nature that protected areas contain and provide.

Industrial melanism in the context of ultraviolet reflectance

This work focuses on the topic known as industrial melanism. The main aim of this thesis is to summarize the knowledge published on this topic. The first mentions about industrial melanism appeared in England in the end of 19th century. Many different hypotheses emerged during the last one hundred years. The work starts with introduction of the fundamental theory of industrial melanism in the context of environmental change during last three hundred years. Furthermore, the historical development of ideas on industrial melanism is given and contemporary hypotheses are discussed. Significantly, work deals with the biological role of UV reflectance in the context of industrial melanism.

Importance of UV perception for dragonflies (Odonata)

It has long been known that some animals are able to perceive radiation at other wavelengths than perceive we humans. In dragonflies, UV sensitivity has been demonstrated in the 1974, however a recent study has unveiled an extraordinary diversity of genes of specific photoreceptor proteins known as opsins, including UV-sensitive opsin. In addition some dragonflies have coloration on their body and wings, which can reflect UV radiation at unchanged wavelength - UV reflectance. Very little is known about the use of UV in dragonfly life. My thesis summarizes the current knowledge of the importance of UV for dragonflies, focusing on interspecific and intraspecific communication.
Covariance between UV-reflectance, wing shape, and environmental variables in Pieris napi (Lepidoptera: Pieridae)

Visual features of the wing colour, with special reference to the intensity of UV reflectance of the Green-veined White (Pieris napi) were investigated. Several studies revealed that only females of Pieris napi possess UV reflectance on dorsal wing surface. Based on UV sensitive photography, we analysed correlation between environmental conditions (productivity and climate) and 3 patches on forewing of 347 specimens of P. napi from Palaearctic region. Males significantly differ in level of intensity of UV reflectance from females. UV intensity in females is 25% higher in comparison with males. This phenomenon is explained by different deposition of wing pterins. Further, environment significantly affects UV intensity on the forewings of females, but not males. Moreover, we accomplished the analysis of fluctuating asymmetry. First we subjected the environmental variables to PCA. In females, the first PCA axis (temperature seasonality, temperature annual range and longitude) significantly correlated with UV intensity. In males, the second PCA axis (latitude and altitude) was significantly correlated with FA.
