El águila y la serpiente; testimony of the Mexican Revolution
Lagová, Tereza ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Socháňová, Šarlota (referee)
This bachelor thesis concerns the novel El águila y la serpiente / The Eagle and the Serpent by Martín Luis Guzmán. It introduces the historical background of the Mexican Revolution, since the author himself participated in the Revolution and the novel contains autobiographical features. Further, this thesis analyses the motive of a journey undertaken by the author. The journey through the Revolution becomes, to some extent, a journey of self-discovery, and as the author progresses, he meets the revolutionaries who are the main "driving force" of the Revolution. The main aim of this work is to characterize the author's relationship both to the revolutionary events and to the great personalities of the Revolution (e.g. Pancho Villa) and also to portray the way in which he projects his perception of this reality into the work.
The journey motif in the Carpentier's The Lost Steps and Explosion in a Cathedral
Maroušek, Lukáš ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Socháňová, Šarlota (referee)
Alejo Carpentier is a representative of the so-called marvellous real. However, his novels also deal with issues of the Hispanic American identity, dictatorships and, in general, historical events in Europe and America. In his literary work, we can contemplate very often the journey motif undertaken by the main characters, which is not only a movement from one place to another (the horizontal journey), but which is also a journey in the time and a path of initiation where the heroes discover themselves (the vertical path). The journey motif and its forms in the Carpentier's novels The Lost Steps (which we classify as a forest novel) and Explosion in the Cathedral (where we can find Carpentier's favourite motif of revolution, and what it implies) are the topic of this bachelor's thesis. The present work is focused on the journeys of the main heroes of the novels. The analysis will also be supplemented with an elementary theory of the marvellous real. Klíčová slova anglicky Alejo Carpentier - Cuba - The Lost Steps - Explosion in a Cathedral - the journey motif - novel
Approach to the topic of drug trafficking in the contemporary Colombian prose
Hladík, Matěj ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Socháňová, Šarlota (referee)
The present work elaborates on the approach of several contemporary Colombian authors towards the matter of the drug trafficking and activities of Colombian drug cartels between the 1970's and 1990's. The main goal is to summarize the principal affairs of the period and their representation in the current Colombian prose and, primarily, point out the different attitudes towards the adaptation of the topic between individual authors. The drug trafficking problem nowadays appears as a potent literary theme throughout many Latin American countries, especially in Colombia, and an inexhaustible quantity of works dealing with the topic arise continuously. Therefore, it seams impossible to cover all authors involved. On that account, I have decided to work with the limited corpus comprised of three representative novels: Amando a Pablo, Odiando a Escobar (Virginia Vallego), Rosario Tijeras (Jorge Franco) and La Virgen de los sicarios (Fernando Vallejo). The mentioned novels are linked by the same main theme - the drug problem and related violence - however, their literary style and author's prism differ. Based on this corpus, I will attempt to ilustrate the disunited viewing of the problem which continues to form a topical and controversial subject of discussion in the context of the Colombian society....
