The comparison of sign language interpreters working at universities in the Czech Republic and in Finland

This bachelor thesis presents a comparative analysis between sign language interpreters' education working at universities in the Czech Republic and Finland. The paper consists of two segments: theory and research. The aim of the theoretical component is to describe the specifics of interpreting at universities based on relevant legislation and sources and to present the educational systems and training possibilities available in both countries. The research is based on a survey among sign language interpreters from the Czech Republic and Finland, which aims to reveal their actual level of education and degree of satisfaction regarding their current professional situation as interpreters at universities and the quality of their own education. The thesis, thus, collates information from the theoretical and research components to analyze and contrast sign language interpreters' education in both countries. Corpora od sign languages

The purpose of this thesis is to describe specifics of sign languages corpora creation and structure and to design a form of a corpus of Czech Sign Language. These specifics are illustrated on two specific foreign corpus of sign languages. The first part of the thesis tells basic information about corpus linguistics and sums up characteristics related to a sign language corpus and also a corpus of a spoken language. The thesis deals with a general description of the steps that are necessary in the process of creating a sign language corpus. Major part of the thesis is devoted to describing two foreign corpora of sign languages - the corpus of Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and the corpus of German Sign Language (DGS). Both of the corpora include information about how they were created and their structure, i.e. data collection and data processing, a selection and creation of an appropriate software. While the part dedicated to Auslan describes the process of annotation of language data in detail, the part about DGS is more focused on the elicitation process. The possibility of forming a Czech Sign Language corpus is outlined in the conclusion of the thesis, as well as a proposal of its possible form.

Closed Captions for the Deaf in Czech Movies on DVDs

This bachelor thesis focuses on hidden subtitles in the Czech feature films on DVD for deaf audience. According to Act. No. 249/2006 distributors have been obliged to provide DVD media with the Czech feature films with subtitles for deaf audience. The aim of the thesis is to compare this legal regulation with the legislative status in selected European and non-European countries as well as to map out the observance of this Czech legal obligation according to the basis of the DVD production analysis from years 2007-2016 and finally to define the prevailing strategies that are in place for creating subtitles for deaf audience on DVDs in the Czech Republic. Changes in height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation

This thesis focuses on changes in the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation. The theoretical base of the thesis originates from both Czech and foreign linguistic literature devoted to phonological processes in speech. One part of the thesis is basic insight into the issues of phonological processes in sign languages. The research of the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation follows the recent studies dedicated on changes in height of articulation of speakers of Dutch, American, Australian and New Zealand Sign Languages (Ormel, Crasborn, Kooij 2013; Tyrone, Mauk 2010; Grosvald, Corina 2012a; Russell, Wilkinson, Janzen 2011; Lucas et al. 2002; Schembri et al. 2009). The goal of the research is to describe the changes in height of articulation by the one-handed lexical signs with the place of articulation in the head area (the target signs KNOW and REMEMBER) affected by their phonetic context. The data were collected during the recordings of sign langugae production of 15 participants, all speakers of Czech Sign Language. 1400 tokens of target signs were excerpted and analysed in total. Gradual modifications of the Czech sign language used in communication with the deaf who have progressive visual impairment

This bachelor thesis describes modifications of the Czech sign language, used in communication with the deaf who have a progressive visual impairment of several levels. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces the modified and the tactile sign language, which these people will probably once use for the communication. There is also mentioned the issue of interpreting for the deafblind people. The practical part of the thesis contains an analysis of videos that show a conversation of two prelingual deaf people with their deafblind partners. All these videos were compared with a conversation of prelingual deaf communication partners without a visual impairment about the same themes. The results of the research demonstrates, that both of the deaf speakers made the similar basic principles of the modifications, but their frequency differed in order to the level of the visual impairment of the deafblind recipient. Based on the results there were made some basic recommendations for a communication and interpreting for people who have a progressive visual impairment. The role of boarding schools for the Deaf in the Czech Republic - since 1786 to present days

(in English): This bachelor thesis presents the history and development of institutional care at the Czech boarding schools for the hearing impaired, as well as at the then institutes for the Deaf and dumb from 1786 to present. It describes the regime at these boarding schools, extracurricular activities of the pupils, pedagogical supervision and the schools facilities. The school regime is dealt with according to centuries. The bachelor work also brings up the issue of the Deaf communities, both home and abroad and explores the impact of the boarding schools on the community. The findings are interpreted in the light of individual development of the child staying in a boarding school, namely its impact on child's personality. The work draws data from the specialized past and present bibliography, legislative norms and other relevant documents. The final part of the bachelor thesis presents the results of the findings concerning the issue of hearing impaired children in residential care. They prove that children staying in boarding schools suffer from deprivation which is, furthermore, enhanced in case of deaf children who lack an opportunity to communicate in their mother tongue, i.e. sign language with the peers. They neither have a contact with their surrounding, nor are exposed to every day...

Role shifting in Czech Sign Language

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the expression of role shifting in Czech sign language. The goal of the thesis is to describe the mechanisms of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language within our survey and comparing the results with findings from abroad. The principles of work are mostly based on foreign literature and they are compared with Czech sign language. A part of the thesis is a DVD of deaf respondents' recordings who use Czech sign language and which illustrate the way of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language.

Movement and its modification in Czech Tactile Sign Language

This thesis describes a movement and its modifications in the Czech tactile sign language in comparison with the Czech sign language. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes general knowledge about the Czech sign language in its tactile form and presents various types of modifications of the movement. The practical part of the thesis demonstrates these types of modifications used by deafblind people who communicate in the Czech tactile sign language. A video of a conversation of deafblind people was made for a research. This video was analyzed in detail and the findings are described and illustrated by pictures and videos. The result of the research demonstrates different forms of the movement and its modifications in the Czech tactile sign language which are very individual and depends completely on specific situation of communication and communication partners.
