The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide an adequate Czech translation of Cicero's Ninth Phillipica, which has not been translated into Czech yet. Furthermore, the thesis contains an analysis of Cicero's arguments used in this speech. The analysis concentrates on a comprehensible explanation of Cicero's main arguments. The Emperor Caligula between megalomania and reality
Brejchová, Denisa ; Marek, Václav (advisor) ; Ctibor, Michal (referee)
The topic of my bachelor's thesis is a treatise on Caligula, the third emperor of the Iulian- Claudian dynasty. In the first part I characterize the primary sources, in particular Philo of Alexandria, Josephus Flavius, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio. From these primary sources, I select Caligula's deeds and assess the objectivity of the source author, taking into account the comments of modern authors. In this thesis, space is also devoted to coins minted under Caligula. I assess whether Caligula's personality traits are reflected in the themes of the paintings and legends. In a chapter devoted to secondary literature, I address the question of whether modern authors adopt the ancient narrative of Caligula as a mad emperor or, alternatively, attempt to rationalize Caligula's actions in some way. I also briefly examine the portrayal of Caligula in drama, novel and film. Keywords: Ancient Rome - Caligula - Coins - History
Translation of Cicero's Speech De provinciis consularibus with an analysis of rhethorical strategies
Igaz, Miroslav ; Ctibor, Michal (advisor) ; Marek, Václav (referee)
A considerable part of preserved speeches of Roman author Marcus Tullius Cicero has been still untranslated and yet uknown for Slovak or Czech reader. This bachelor's thesis is partially removing an extant handicap by the first translation of the speech De provinciis consularibus into Slovak language. Concurrently it is introducing into a discussion the historical context which affects the speech and by using a communication perspective of arguments and argumentation is endeavoring to apply a classification of arguments on an ancient rhetorical text. Via description of rhetorical strategies it can point to the author's grasp of topic and a method of arguing within creating a rhetorical expose with a political connotation.
Late Roman Silver Coinage (from Arcadius and Honorius to the end of the 5th century AD)
Gambacorta, Federico ; Marek, Václav (advisor) ; Kolniková, Eva (referee) ; Militký, Jiří (referee)
This PhD research has furnished the occasion to update the outdated works about Late Roman coinage focusing especially on a topic not so commonly examined like the Late Roman silver coinage. More precisely, it is analysed and discussed some of its more intriguing aspects. First of all how silver, as metal, was considered and perceived in Late Roman society and, therefore, why during fifth century AD silver bullion was used to produce fine silver objects rather than coins. Two different Late Roman customs concerning silver coinage are then reviewed: hoarding, with a list of most recent findings, and clipping. Finally a chapter is dedicated to the metrology and fineness of Late Roman silver coins together with an accurate analysis of the 7 different denominations. This extensive and deep discussion about Late Roman silver coinage's main problematics is completed by the most recent and updated catalogue of all the Late Roman silver denominations known so far. Such a review has given not only the possibility of updating or modifying some of the previous theories but also the opportunity to suggest some new ideas. --------------------------------------- Podrobně jsou zkoumány některé konkrétní zásadsní otázky, především jakým způsobem bylo v pozdně římské společnosti vnímáno stříbro jako kov a proč tedy...

Lysias' Speech against Eratosthenes. Translation, Commentary, and Introductory Study.
Nývlt, Pavel ; Souček, Jan (advisor) ; Marek, Václav (referee)
Lysias' speech Against Eratosthenes is the most famous speech of Lysias, Athen's most prolific author of lawcourt speeches. It deals with a murder of Lysias' brother Polemarchus, who was arrested and executed under the rule of so-called "Thirty Tyrants" in 404 B. C. And yet the topics covered are much wider, the speech thereby becoming a portrayal of the darkest times athenian democracy ever witnessed and a valuable document of democratic point of view on the events. The speech is commented from a historical point of view, focusing in the first place on political history and history of law.
Connection between distribution of socio-economic characteristics of population and economy in relation to railway network in Czechoslovakia in 1921 and 1930
Marek, Martin Václav ; Marada, Miroslav (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
Connection between distribution of socio-economic characteristics of population and economy in relation to railway network in Czechoslovakia in 1921 and 1930 Abstract Transport is closely related with social and economic processes in space and they affect each other. History of transport, and economy and history of the population are themes quite well covered. Attempts to synthetically cover history of transport and society and its activities in the space have not been numerous, if any they only referred to certain examples, although the transport, especially rail, is mentioned as an important factor of development. The diploma thesis analyzes statistical dependece of selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of national censuses in 1921 and 1930 and economic characteristics and agriculural units in 1930 on rail infrastructure in the Czechoslovak Republic. The key statistical data are selected census results (eg. age of population, literacy and inhabitans in the sector of the national economy), results of census of economic and agricultural units (for example units equipment) at the level of administrative units in Czechoslovakia. Spatial data (maps) are an important source, too. These allow statistical and visualization operations in the GIS. They had to be digitized in order to create map...
The Andokides' speech On the mysteries. Translation, commentary and introductory study
Novotný, Matěj ; Souček, Jan (advisor) ; Marek, Václav (referee)
In the end of the 5th century B.C., the Andokides' speech On the mysteries represents an interesting source of information. It focuses on the processes with impious criminals who mutilated herms and profaned Eleusinian mysteries in 415 B.C., and the revision of Athenian laws in 403 B.C. This thesis attempts to present this speech in historical context, to evaluate critically its credibility, and to point out general problems concerning the use of the corpus of the Attic orators as a source of information regarding political and legal history. Thus the centre of the thesis lies in the commentary attached to a completely new Czech translation of Andokides' speech.
