Strategic Planning of the industry-political Business Development of Rheinmetall in the European Union
Bendik, Andreas ; Kopečný, Tomáš (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
The introduction of the dual comitology system with the European defence funding programmes has led to the emergence of a new form of European interest representation. This intra-European interest representation is no longer concerned with the conventional representation of interests in European policy processes, but with the formation of alliances with Member States for defence industrial cooperation. This emergence precedes a 40-year-long push-pull process between the European Commission and the European Council in the context of a conflict between liberalisation and protection of the internal defence market. In order to prevent Member States from extensive application of Article 346 (TFEU) and thus to prevent further fragmentation of the European defence industrial base, the European Commission has innovated the political room for manoeuvre it was given by the Treaties to create a Europeanised version of Article 346 in the Public Procurement Directive 2009/81/EC. Article 13(c) states that, if two or more Member States have jointly researched and developed a defence product, the procurement of that product by the participating Member States is excluded from the competition rules of the internal market. After a long trust-building process between the European Commission and the European Council,...

Sanctions as an element of geopolitical blow against Russian capability in war with Ukraine
Moiseeva, Daria ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
War in Ukraine shaped the future of Europe and determined future relationship between Russia and Western allies. Sanctions - preferred geopolitical method of punishment of the West - were imposed on Russian economy. This included individual sanction, trade embargoes and oil price cap, financial sanctions on Russian institutions and banks, SWIFT disconnection. This work is taking a look at different spheres of Russia and finds how sanctions affected them. As a result, there were found some mechanism problems with individual sanctions. Russian trade patterns have changed, but this change is short term as its new economic partners consider Moscow as short-term solution. State of Russian government finances is fragile. Russia will get poor and stagnate slowly, but irrespectively. It is losing its geopolitical influence in Post- Soviet space and is trying to find new ways to project its power, for example, in Africa. BRICS grouping is experiencing its possible revival when Russia needs it the most. This war was started for Russia to increase its world power, but contrary Russia is losing geopolitical influence regardless of who will win the war. Keywords: Russia, European sanctions, economic and financial sanctions, war in Ukraine, economics and geopolitics, Russian gas and oil
Moving Toward Strategic Cyber War Theory? Analysis of Russian State-backed Cyber Attacks
Green, Joshua ; Erkomaishvili, David (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
This thesis analysed cyber-attacks conducted by two pairs of nation states (Russia/Ukraine and Iran/Israel) against each other, through the lens of Jan Kallberg's Strategic Cyberwar Theory in order to determine if elements of the theory are being applied and if so, how they are being applied. This thesis also attempts to give insights as to whether this represents a shift towards the Strategic Cyber War Theory becoming a practical reality. The thesis finds that elements of Kallberg's theory are clearly visible, to varying degrees, in the offensive campaigns conducted by all the nation states studied. Each nation state employed a different strategy in terms of which pillars of society and organisations were targeted. All the evidence points towards cyber-attacks becoming a more important tool for nation states pursuing their political and strategic goals. However, the notion of the Strategic Cyber War Theory becoming a reality is far more uncertain, with other tools likely to remain more important, particularly during wartime (such as the traditional branches of military service). If a level of technological sophistication can be reached where cyber-attacks can be conducted which have the disruptive capabilities of the NotPetya cyber-attack seen in 2017 but are able to be maintained over a...
How the World Views the Israeli and Hungarian migration policies
Piletskaya, Vera Nika ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
The vitality of study of migration and its outcomes has become one of the red flags of the century. Since the years 2014-2015 western countries have become the destination, but how does the world see migration policies of Hungary and Israel - the two very far from each other states that, with a detailed analysis of their regulations, laws, detentions, and facilities for those purposes, appear to have a number of correlations. Badly equipped detention centres and/or camps, long-time application procedures, attempts to relocate refugees, and built-up fences form the common ground of the two countries. Robert Cooper's theory from "The Breaking of Nations" (2004) on the state formation is meant to differentiate the world into three categories, pre-modern, modern, and post-modern. Those would have different opinion on Israeli and Hungarian migration policies, but how does that perception vary? Three focus states would be the representatives for those types of state formation. Libya is for pre-modern states, those are unstable and face the risk of falling from the uneven, usually military, order to chaos; the United States of America comes as a representation of the modern states, which focus on the balance of power, and national security and privacy of their affairs prevails over other matters; and the...
The Securitization of Migration in the European Union during 2015. An analysis of the discourse in Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic
Martínez Carreño, Laura ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
This study seeks to analyse how migration has been constructed into a security question in the European Union during 2015. As denoted by the Copenhagen School, something is a security problem when elites declare it to be so, and securitization legitimises extraordinary measures beyond the political established norms. Migration has been portrayed as a potential threat for the continuity of the cultural identity, the preservation of the public order as well as for the economy stability of the Member States, and consequently it has been securitized. The implication of the European integration process in the construction of the concept of migration into a security question, with the creation of common migration strategy, an increased in surveillance and a reinforcement of border control will be developed. From this standpoint, during 2015 the Union has attended to the biggest refugee influx since the end of the Second World War, and the current research aims to analyse how the Member States have responded to it. To that end, the political discourse of three selected countries: Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic, is going to be examined and compared. Key Words: European Union, securitization, refugee crisis, migration, asylum-seeker
Small Island Developing States and Statehood
Breitling, Dustin ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee)
Dustin Breitling Thesis Advisor: Martin Riegl, PhD. Small Island Developing States and Statehood Abstract: The spate of warnings that have been issued concerning Climate Change and its damaging impact upon the livelihood of populations has garnered increasing acknowledgement and critical concern. In a century where the potential for states to be submerged, concerns are being raised about how states, especially Small Island Developing States, are susceptible to losing Statehood. Small Island Developing States are already being ravaged by higher sea levels and dramatic loss of livelihood through inundation and potential submergence of their territory by the end of the century. Already these concerns are catalyzing Small Island Developing States to seek out alternative arrangements for their populations and importantly to preserve their legal personality. These arrangements tie in decisive concerns that connect how States are understood within in the international community as possessing a permanent territory, effective governance, permanent population and the capacity to be recognized by others. The angle offered and explored here becomes what happens once a permanent territory is undermined by seawaters and populations are relocated to Host States. If these issues are bound to occur then can historical...

Selected Geopolitical Aspects of the EU's Energy Security
Lang, Petr ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Landovský, Jakub (referee) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
This thesis deals with the geopolitical aspects resulting from the increasing EU dependence on natural gas imports from the external suppliers. In addition to the investigation into he current situation of the EU market with natural gas, nature of major suppliers is explored, the thesis tries to identify the main risks to the security of supplies, especially the possibility of politically motivated supply disruption. From a broader perspective, it scrutinizes whether the natural gas market is driven by the market-based principles and regulated by international organizations (Market and Institutions scenario) or the bilateral relations between producer and consumer are the decisive factor (Regions and Empires scenario). Furthermore, the analysis of relevant documents issued by the EU institutions is also included and the thesis aims to assess the feasibility of the single 2 European external energy policy. Finally, the thesis includes two case-studies: the first one is dealing with energy relations between Russia and Belarus and Ukraine. The second one is dedicated to the Nord Stream gas pipeline project.
