Impact of English on the Modern Hindi

The aim of this thesis was to provide a description of the linguistic behaviour and repertoire of the speakers of Hindi from the so-called middle-class of the capital city of Delhi, who come into contact with native speakers of English in their employment and everyday life. Therefore, the thesis starts with CHAPTER ONE, where I described and explained the methodology and material used (1.1.0), provided a definition of the middle class in India and its determinants (1.2.0.) in view to my respondents and thirdly gave a detailed insight into the multicultural and multilingual situation in Delhi (1.3.0.), where all of the respondents live. In CHAPTER TWO, I demonstrated the evolution of the language presently known as Hindi, i.e. a language that has been influenced and enriched by various cultures and languages, both from the internal sources such as the Sanskrit based words tatsama (2.1.1.), Hindi based words tadbhava (2.1.2.) and vernacular words called desi (2.2.) as well as external sources, such as Arabic (2.3.1.), Turkish (2.3.2.), Urdu (2.3.3.) or Persian (2.3.4.) and especially the linguistic influences connected with the European Colonial Powers, such as Portuguese (2.4.1.) and above all English (2.4.2.), whose influence started to be felt from the second half of the 19th century and culminated in the...

Indian epics and its development in non-Indian areas (Malaysia, Java)

Cílem této práce je popsat a vysvětlit vliv starší indické epické tvorby1 na javánskou a malajskou literaturu v kontextu indického kulturního vlivu na celou oblast jihovýchodní Asie. Pokusím se poukázat na zásadní skutečnost indického vlivu na literární tvorbu této oblasti, kterou je výrazná heterogenita indických zdrojů a tendence javánských a malajských tvůrců kjejich syntéze.2 Žádné literární dílo, které je napsáno starou javánštinou nebo klasickou malajštinou3 není překladem indického díla, ale vždy je indickou literaturou velmi silně ovlivněno . V případě některých nejstarších textů můžeme hovořit o adaptacích. Časový rámec této studie je vymezen předislámským obdobím, které v jihovýchodoasijské oblasti končí v 15. století. Spodní chronologická hranice je pak vymezena 9. stoletím, kdy vzniká první dosud známé literární dílo, psané domácím jazykem, a to starojavánská Rámájana. Javánská a malajská literatura, kterými bych se chtěl v této práci podrobněji zabývat, reprezentují hodnotnou součást těchto dvou velkých kultur inda-malajské oblasti jihovýchodní Asie. Ač obě dvě národní literatury prošly specifickým vývojem, mají řadu společných rysů a vývojových tendencí. Traditional Indian Clothing

My bachelor thesis deals with the theme of traditional Indian clothing - it is basic overview on this topic. The first part deals with clothing from the view of social and cultural anthropology. Following part is about the history of Indian clothing from ancient times to the present. Next part deals with the technology of production of clothing materials. The last section is devoted to the clothing itself and focuses on three aspects that affect its wearer (age, gender and occasion). The work is accompanied by a picture supplement and glossary of special terms.

Absolutive constructions in Hindi

Úkolem této práce je pojednat o hindském přechodníku a přechodníkových konstrukcích. Jejím cílem je popsat hindský přechodník co nejkomplexněji. Rozumí se tím především jeho začlenění do slovesného systému, jeho popis z formálního morfologického hlediska a především určení jeho syntaktických a sémantických vztahů vůči určitým slovesným větným členům. Kromě toho je cílem práce též určení četnosti užívání přechodníků v moderní hindské próze.

The modern art in India - the outline of development

This bachelor thesis attempts to provide a chronological outline of the development of Indian modern visual arts - from its beginnings to the present. A key determinant for the attribute "modern" used in this thesis, is related to the Indian cultural and historical context in its specifics. The key topics of this thesis are especially various forms of modern Indian art and cultural tradition, eclecticism and universal visual language, as well as the question of effects of cultural globalization. The thesis has been structured in a manner, that each chapter provides in its beginning a general idea and description of the context to which a concrete style of artistic approach responses. There are also key references to the emergence of some major institutions included (such as certain art schools and academies, the National Gallery, Expo, Triennale etc.). The individual chapters deal with representative artists. Their works and life stories may be helpful in approach to further understanding modern Indian art in its complexity. The work is complemented by several short appendices.

Animals in Bengali idioms

The thesis describes Bengali idioms in which the main component is a name of an animal. It concentrates on the roles and characters of the particular animals in Bengali idioms and consequently compares them with the animal characters which come from Indian cultural tradition. The material for this comparison consists primarily of Indian fables and their symbolic meanings and secondly the Hindu mythology. The third aspect the thesis looks at is comparison with animal characters arising from Czech idioms. Numerous examples of idioms for every animal are included to illustrate their individual characters.

Rabindranath Tagore and Czechoslovakia

This thesis deals with poet Rabindranath Tagore's relationship to our homeland, in those days' Czechoslovakia. His attitude to and friendship with the country's leading personalities were far from superficial, but very deep and sincere. The introduction summarizes the poet's work and the main life steps he made. Then I tried to outline the particular political situation in the Czech Republic and India at the time of his life, to have an idea in which period he lived and worked. In the crucial part of the work, figures associated with Tagore's name are given. The main charter of the thesis focuses on Tagore's with two prominent indologists of that period, Vincenc Lesný and Moritz Winternitz. The following one describes his relationship with Leoš Janáček, Karel Čapek, Milada Ganguli and others. The thesis also contains an attachment in the form of transcripts of the main Tagores's works by Dušan Zbavitel and Vincenc Lesný. In the closing part I briefly outlined the way Tagore's personality was affected by other countries and vice versa.

Arabian and Persian influence on the development of Hindi

This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of Persian and Arabic languages on Hindi, which is originally an Indo-Aryan language. The first part of this thesis is concerned with the historical context and conditions which led to the infiltration of foreign elements into the North Indian language area. In further parts of the thesis, the linguistic areas in which the most prominent changes occurred as a result of a long-term lingual contact are specified. The emphasis is put mainly on analyses in the field of vocabulary enrichment, especially on the adaptation of extraneous lexical units and lexical hybridisation phenomena. Tenses and Moods in Hindi

In hindi tenses and moods can be divided into two groups: root tenses and moods and auxiliated tenses and moods. Among root tenses and moods belong: futurum, imperative and subjunctive. Auxiliated tenses and moods can be divided into: imperfective, perfective and progressive. This work describes each of moods and tenses in mentioned groups. Each is written according to structure and function. The decription is accompanied by examples from descriptive grammars of Hindi and literature.
