Cide Hamete Benengeli in The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha
Melero Pavlíčková, Miriam ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Juračková, Pavlína (referee)
This thesis focuses on analysing the character Cide Hamete Benengeli in the novel The Ingenious Knight Don Quixote de la Mancha written by Miguel de Cervantes. Cide Hamate Benengeli appears for the first time in chapter IX of the first book. With his appearance, the novel is complicated because of its multiple clashing voices and authors. The character represents an indispensable part of Cervantes's metafictional game. Cide Hamete is a character full of paradoxes; a Moor who lies yet an historian and omniscient author who can also transcend between the literal layers of the novels. This thesis focuses primarily on the ambiguous ways in which Cide Hamete's appearance in the novels has been interpreted by literary critics. To this end, this thesis will examine the origin of the character's name, his identity, and his function in the novel.
Las Sinsombrero - forgotten women artists through the memories of Concha Méndez and María Teresa León
Bučánková, Anna ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Juračková, Pavlína (referee)
"One day, Federico, Dalí, Margarita Manso and I had the idea to take off our hats..." This is the beginning of a quote by the surrealist painter Maruja Mallo about a small rebellion realized during a stroll around Puerta del Sol, which gave its name to a whole generation of women artists who have been forgotten throughout history. Las Sinsombrero, the ones without hats, were women creating in the 1920s and 1930s, in the so-called Silver Age of Spanish literature, side by side with their famous male counterparts of the Generation 27. The legacy of Maruja Mallo, Concha Méndez, Rosa Chacel, María Zambrano, Ernestina de Champourcín, María Teresa León, Josefina de la Torre, Carmen Conde, Ángeles Santos, Margarita Manso, María Blanchard and Marga Gil Roësset can be found not only in the field of literature, but also painting, sculpture, film and philosophy. This thesis focuses on two authors selected from their midst, namely poet Concha Méndez and writer María Teresa León. It aims to introduce this forgotten generation with the help of their own memories, captured in in the book assembled by Concha Méndez's granddaughter Paloma Ulacia Altolaguirre, Concha Méndez. Memorias habladas, memorias armadas, in her poetry and in María Teresa León's autobiographical work Memoria de la melancolía. By focusing on...
orge Guillén's Cántico and Cubism
Malánová, Lucie ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Juračková, Pavlína (referee)
This thesis focuses on the Spanish poet Jorge Guillén and analyzes his relationship with cubism. Even though cubism as a movement was mainly influential in avant-garde art and architecture, its impact on literature and poetry is also discussed when it comes to the work of Jorge Guillén. In particular, the topic of this thesis is Guillén's early poetry work and its relation to cubism. The poems were taken from the first edition of the work Cántico and an phenomenological analysis was used to study schematic aspects of the work. The goal of this thesis is to identify unique phenomena and repeating patterns which would allow the poems to be interpreted, estetically, as cubistic.
Luis Cernuda - The Melancholic Poet Tossed beetwen the Reality and the Desire.
Don Quijote in-between Literary Theory and Literary History and in-between Outer and Inner Explanatory Contexs
Juračková, Pavlína ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
Cervantes' Don Quixote (1605, 1615) is one of the most significant works of European literature. In the 20th century, the two-part novel became one of the fundamental texts for literary and cultural theorists, on which they based their theoretical studies on writing, literature, and culture in general. But do external theoretical views agree with a specific literary history? The diploma thesis presents three selected interpretations of Don Quixote (by V. Shklovsky, M. Bakhtin, and M. Foucault), which are compared with the findings from Spanish studies and with the novel in the original. At the same time, the reading of theoretical works should not be primarily revisionist; the thesis has a comparative character, and the aim is to express the relation between external and internal views of Cervantes' novel.
Jorge de Montemayor and the Diana: a pastoral romance or mysticism?
Juračková, Pavlína ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Housková, Anna (referee)
Writer Jorge de Montemayor wrote in the Spanish 16th century. History of literature is mainly interested in his last book Los siete libros de la Diana (The Seven Books of Diana) which is traditionally called the first pastoral romance written in the Iberian Peninsula. Concurrently, most studies explain the book from the same perspective, which works with the big artistic period (Renaissance) and artistic genre (the pastoral romance). If we focus on Jorge de Montemayor's book from a different view - which is connected with period situation (problems of converso, the Inquisition, the heterodoxy's opinions or book censorship) and which takes the author's previous texts in consideration - we are able to reread his work. This thesis seeks to use ideas coming from New Historicism. Using period situation Montemayor's texts set out to explain that Los siete libros de la Diana is closer to the spiritual way of mysticism than to literary form such as the pastoral romance.
