Apothecaries in the Czech countries in the early modern period
Čižmárová, Lucia ; Ebelová, Ivana (advisor) ; Hlaváčková, Ludmila (referee)
The thesis deals with the history of apothecaries and pharmacists until 1170. Its primary focus is on the apothecaries who were working in Prague. The first part of this thesis treats of pharmacy development in Europe and continues with the general development of pharmacists and apothecaries in the Czech lands. It does provide a complex overview of pharmacists acting in Prague, whose records are being retained in archive sources. Except for proffesional degree of pharmacists the thesis also describes Medicinal rules, which they had to follow. The thesis also describes equipment and instruments that the pharmacists were using on daily basis. Further, the thesis focuses on the pharmacy atmosphere that used to have its mysterious specificity. In the conclusion, a short excursion to a Prague pharmacy is described.
The administrative development and life in the state asylum in Prague
Chaloupková, Petra ; Ebelová, Ivana (advisor) ; Hlaváčková, Ludmila (referee)
This work traces a 95-year period of working of the Municipal Establishment for Deranged People (Zemský ústav pro choromyslné) in Prague. More exactly, it deals with the period from its foundation in 1791 until the origination of its successor institutions - the Czech and German Psychiatric Clinics in the year 1866. The first part of the work describes the foundation of the establishment, beginnings of its operation, its successive disaffiliation from the General Hospital (Všeobecná nemocnice), of which it was initially a part, its rapid building development, and the establishment's day-to-day life. In the year 1846, the establishment became a stand-alone medical institution, entirely independent of the hospital's management. It was a state charitable institution and, as such, it was financed by the state. It obtained additional funds for its operation from the fees for the provided care and other activities. The Chapter Two, which maps the years 1846-1864, addresses not only these financial matters, but also the establishment's separate administration and its other building and qualitative developments. The last Chapter is devoted to the period of the years 1864-1886 when the establishment was completely assigned to the administration of the Municipal Committee. It chronicles, in addition to administrative...
Prague Faculties of Medicine and Their Clinics in 1938-1945
Svobodný, Petr ; Hlaváčková, Ludmila (advisor) ; Hach, Petr (referee) ; Míšková, Alena (referee)
The developments that took place in Prague in 1939-1945 offer a particularly interesting starting point for analysing the impact which changing political circumstances can have on universities. The progress of events at Prague universities and institutions of higher learning at key points of the period of 1938/39-1945 does not readily lend itself to any sort of 'straightforward' characterisation that would take us from a Nazification of the German (and Austrian) universities after 1933 to their eventual de-Nazification after 1945, or from a closing of universities of the occupied country to their eventual re-opening after 1945 (as was, for example, the case in Poland). The parallel existence of both a Czech and a German university (and technical university), their complementary and at times strongly diverging histories at key moments of the 20th century, supply a rich source of material for a study of the complex interplay between politics, university education, and science. Present intention of this dissertation, however, is not to present these universities as a whole. It focuses just on their faculties of medicine, including their clinical background in Prague hospitals. Faculties of medicine have a unique position not only with respect to other parts of a university, but also in other areas of...
The Spanish Flu Pandemic 1918/19 with particular reference to the Bohemian Lands and Central European relations
Salfellner, Harald ; Hlaváčková, Ludmila (advisor) ; Fialová, Ludmila (referee) ; Pock, Lumír (referee)
Charles University First Medical Faculty Study programme: History of Medicine Summary of dissertation The Spanish Flu Pandemic 1918/19 with particular reference to the Bohemian Lands and Central European relations Dr. med. univ. Harald Salfellner Prague, 2017 Summary Towards the end of the First World War, in 1918 and 1919, humanity faced a previously unparalleled flu pandemic; within a few months, more people had been killed than in all the battles of the 1914-18 war put together. The precise number of victims is unknown but is today generally reckoned at between 20 and 50 million. The whole world was affected by the Spanish flu, with the exception of a few remote islands, and Europe, already bled to death by industrialised warfare, was particularly hard hit. In summer 1918, the pandemic reached Bohemia in an early, relatively benign wave. A few weeks later, thousands were struck down in Prague in a second and far more deadly phase of the illness. In October 1918, as the First Czechoslovakian Republic arose from the ashes of the multiethnic Austrian state, and the masses celebrated in the cities, thousands of feverish patients were coughing behind drawn curtains, and facing an uncertain fate. In the USA, the flu pandemic - the greatest health disaster of the 20th century - has been the subject of many...
History of Dermatovenereology at Prague Medica l Faculties 1790 - 1945

History of Dermatovenereology at Prague Medical Faculties in years 1790-1945. MUDr. Zuzana Kružicová Summary: The history of dermatovenerology at the Prague medical faculties has so far evaded the attention of medical historians. This work therefore fills the gap - albeit partially - by presenting a development of the discipline at the Charles University including its roots in Vienna. To achieve the goal I have first started with the figure of F. Hebra, the founder of modern systematics of skin diseases, and I have also attempted to outline the position of the Vienna dermatovenerology within the European context. The second part of my thesis describes the development of Prague dermatovenerology, which was reconstructed on base of study of archival as well as printed sources spanning the period between 1840s and 1945. The research strives to capture life and medical works of the leading figures in our dermatovenerology - A. Kraus, J. Čejka, J. Waller, V. Petters, V. Janovský, F. Šamberger, K. Gawalowski, P. J. Pick, K. Kreibich and J. Bezecny (Greipl). Apart from the biographical information I also focuse on the gradual development of dermatovenerology as a medical field, while highlighting its diagnostic and therapeutic options. My goal was to develop a comprehensive overview of the scientific publications,...
