Subjectivity and Immanence: Kant's Reception in Adorno's "Negative Dialectics"

Subjectivity and Immanence: Kant's Reception in Adorno's "Negative Dialectics" - Guram Rekhviashvili Abstract The aim of this Master's thesis is to elaborate Kant's central position in Adorno's late dialectical project around the subject principle of the justification of objectivity and the thing-in-itself problem and, accordingly, to clearly situate Kant's role in the book Negative Dialectics. Rather than following the constellation of receptions in the models of the book that explicitly refer to Kant's themes (the models: freedom and metaphysics), my project aims to question Adorno's methodology of conceptualisation, which identifies the constellation processes as relating to the motifs of the Critique of Pure Reason. This leads to two central conclusions: The subjectivity of constellations as a communicative relational logic of concepts and non-conceptual disputes is methodologically grounded by the Kantian motifs of the concept of critique as hermeneutically valid, i.e. the concrete results and organisations of constellations are based in their developmental dynamics on the negative review process of representation. In other words, for Adorno, the conceptual principle of representation in the dialectical tradition is thoroughly shaped by Kant's questions of subjectivity. Secondly, the main task of the...

Paul Yorck von Wartenburg's conception of Geschichtlichkeit
De Melo Coan, Isadora Cristina ; Hartung, Gerald (advisor) ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (referee)
Paul Yorck von Wartenburgs Auffassung von Geschichtlichkeit Abstract The aim of this research is to examine the conception of historicity [Geschichtlichkeit] of the count Paul Yorck von Wartenburg - who is perhaps better known for his friendship with Wilhelm Dilthey. The recuperation and investigation of Yorck's arguments takes place in the context of his rejection of metaphysical and positivist models as well as from his constant intellectual exchange with Dilthey. The focus of the present analysis is Yorck's concept of person, strongly influenced by Christian doctrine, as well as his psychology of history: here we will identify how the author understands historical reality and the dependency between attitudes of consciousness [Bewusstseinsstellungen] and the context of life. Adjacent concepts ofYorck's conception of historicity, such as syndesmos (historical connection between people), "aliveness" or life [Lebendigkeit], totality [Totalität] and the human being in its entirety [Ganzer Mensch], are also examined in order to better understand Yorck's notion of historicity and its divergences to Dilthey's approach to the humanities. These observations allow us to identify some of the ways in which the relation between philosophy and history has been thought. Keywords: Paul Yorck von Wartenburg; Historicity...
"The wealth of nothingness" - On the (im)possibility of metaphysics in Adorno and Beckett
Schenk, Jan David ; Hartung, Gerald (advisor) ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (referee)
English abstract: "The wealth of nothingness - On the (im)possibility of metaphysics in Adorno and Beckett": The subject of this paper is Theodor W. Adorno's reception of Samuel Beckett and its embedding in his philosophy. Based on an interpretation of Adorno's treatment of the problem of temporality, it is shown that for Adorno Beckett's work both marks the end of time in a bad infinity and at the same time prepares the turn into a fulfilled time. As the opening of a quasi- utopian temporality, it is argued that the engagement with Beckett represents for Adorno as much as the rescue of the possibility of metaphysics and critical theory through its impossibility, moving in the semantics of gift, promise, and gratitude. Keywords: dialectics, temporality, metaphysics, gift, utopia
Persian Letters as a Representative Case for the Encounter of the Enlightenment with the Other. A Critique of Eurocentrism in Relation to the Concept of Universalism during the Enlightenment
Mohammadi Bozorg, Sakine ; Kuster, Friedericke (advisor) ; Hartung, Gerald (referee)
The research question: How does the concept of "comparison," inspired by the enlightened concept of critique, act as an intercultural mechanism serving the Enlightenment's ideal of universality? The research hypothesis: As a transition period, the Enlightenment aims to build a new world, or more precisely, its goal is to rebuild the modern world based on human reason. The Enlightenment considers humanity to be a universal concept and tends to go beyond European borders to define global patterns of humanity. In this study, the Persian Letters is examined as a philosophical work, which represents the universalist tendencies of the Enlightenment era through a comparative study of the philosophical movement's encounter with foreigners. The study aims to say that the concept of comparison plays a major role in replacing well-established ideas of the era in order to establish new ones. This process of change is initiated through comparisons made between European societies and exotic foreign cultures. The research aim: The purpose of this work is to examine Persian Letters as a sample of efforts made by the Enlightenment thinkers to achieve the Enlightenment ideal: that is, making a "change", or in other words causing revolution, enlightenment or even modernization in non- European societies, based on the...
Michel Foucault's concept of genealogy
Elyasi, Samira ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (advisor) ; Hartung, Gerald (referee)
In this paper, I try to briefly describe Michel Foucault's concept of genealogy. This concept will be located in a wider context, which includes some epistemological debates regarding the possibility of historical knowledge. In this regard I try to introduce the most basic arguments which have traditionally been used against this possibility. Genealogy will be finally presented as a way to overcome these arguments in a critical manner. Key Words: history, historical knowledge, a priori imagination, hermeneutic circle, substance, origin, power, sexuality.
