Prague and Women in Paul Leppin's Novel "Severin's Journey into the Dark"
Czielová, Simona ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
(in English) This thesis deals with the way female characters are portrayed in Paul Leppin's Novel Severin's Journey into the Dark (Severins Gang in die Finsternis, 1914). After the author and his work are shortly introduced, the female characters of the novel are being analysed. Their qualities and their roles and positions in society as well as their relationship to the main male character are being compared to the period scientific papers (mostly psychological and psychiatric works). These influenced the whole society at the beginning of the 20th century and thereby helped to determinate the trends in literature. A part of the thesis also deals with an anthropomorphised picture of Prague. The analysis of the novel should give an answer to the question how much individuality female characters posses and how much the social and psychological premises of turn of the century influenced them.

The thesis aims to compare two film versions of the play Kasimir and Karoline by Ödön von Horváth.The aim is to compare and contrast the first adaptation from 1959 (directed by Michael Kehlmann) with the new one from 2011 (directed by Ben von Grafenstein) to show the general validity and significance of Horvath's plays. From this reason the thesis is focused on the modern film which could show the relevance and the general validity of Horvath's work for the contemporary society.

Hambálková, Zuzana ; Zeman, Dalibor (advisor) ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (referee)
The Bachelor's Thesis "Lexical austriacisms In Thomas Bernhard's novel HolzJiillen" deals with the analysis of austracisms in a belletristic novel. It focuses on classifying according to language areas of the Austrian vocabulary. It also concentrates upon differences In denotation of standard German and specific Austrian dictionaries. It proofs that the usage of the austriacisnls in the novel IS specific, often comprehensible only on the basis of a context. The novel itself has a very complex syntactic structure. The austriacisms are often used in ironic tone which is typical of Bernhard's style of writing. 3
Immigrant voices: Non-native authors in the contemporary Austrian literature on the example of Radek Knapp and Dimitré Dinev
Mrhal, Jaromír ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Glosíková, Viera (referee)
SUMMARY: This thesis deals with the phenomenon of German migrant literature in the context of contemporary Austrian literature. The theoretical part is about general questions of the migrant literature in German-speaking countries - from the search of a suitable term to the dispute about its justification - and further there is a description of the specific situation in Austria. The second and the third part are dedicated to the presentation of two exponents of this sort of literature, the Pole Radek Knapp and the Bulgarian Dimitré Dinev. Based on the analysis of their two most important novels, Herrn Kukas Empfehlungen and Engelszungen, the presence of themes and motifs referring to their origin or migrant experience was confirmed. Nevertheless, as the comparison with their complete works shows, these themes and motifs are definitely not the exclusive ones.
Pragues (night) life in Paul Leppins Hüter der Freude (1918)
Strnadová, Julie ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
(English): The aim of this bachelor thesis is a profound insight into the novel Hüter der Freude (1918) by the Prague German writer Paul Leppin (1878-1945). First, the author and his work are concisely introduced. In the main part I concentrate on social and cultural life in Prague shortly before the turn of the century. Emanating from the novel, I compare the results of a textual analysis with the so far released publications which deal with Prague German literature and life in Prague at the beginning of the 20th century. In the end the reader should primarily have an idea of what social life looked like at the time in which the novel takes place. In addition, I want to find out how Leppinʼs description of Prague corresponds to reality and to what extent it differs. Due to the given scope of the work and the large amount of literature published in this field, it is not possible nor the intent of this work to present a historical study of social life in Prague. It is rather the matter of providing an insight into Leppinʼs ways of describing his surroundings because Prague always was an important topic for the author and played a major role in all his publications as well as in his life.

Heimatroman in Quotation Marks. The Portrayal of Austria in the Novels The Sweetness of Life and The Mattress House by Paulus Hochgatterer
Ehrenberger, Jakub ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The novels of the Austrian writer Paulus Hochgatterer were called by the German literary critic Hans-Joachim Neubauer "Heimatromans in quotation marks". This thesis examines this unclear description in a form of a case study of the portrayal of the country in contemporary Austrian fiction. The study opens with an introduction to the life and works of Paulus Hochgatterer. Its central focus is a detailed analysis of the two latest novels by Hochgatterer, namely The Sweetness of Life (2006) and The Mattress House (2010). The novels are scrutinized on the basis of the preceding theoretical description of the genre Heimatroman and its historical development. The individual chapters consider space, nature, characters and narrative structure. By doing so, the "Heimatroman" claim is refuted and the often narrow understanding of regional literature acquires a global dimension.
