Characteristic position of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the European Union illustated on the event of British rebate
Brožová, Lucie ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Urban, Luděk (referee)
This thesis deals with the problem of British attitude towards European integration. The relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union is described via the existence of a phenomenon of British European budget rebate. The budget rebate is a British reduction in price of the cost of contribution annually sent to the common European Union's budget. It was won by the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Fontainebleau Summit in 1984. The main reason for giving Great Britain this privilege was the fact that the UK was one of the biggest net contributor to the budget. On the other hand, the UK received too little from the budget because it had only a small agricultural sector. The European budget was aimed primarily for subsidising the European farmers. The UK's annual VAT-based contribution to the European budget is reduced according to a formula first set out in the Fontainebleau Agreement. This reduction is equal to 66 % of the difference between what the UK pay for the EC budget and the receipts, which the UK gets back. But, the rebate applies only as for spending within the EU and the British contribution is calculated as if the budget were financed only by VAT. The European Commission is responsible for determining and calculating the amount of the UK's abatement. It is generally calculated...

Manipulation in Literature
Brožová, Ladislava ; Holý, Jiří (advisor) ; Svatoň, Vladimír (referee)
The theme of this diploma thesis is the manipulation in literature as a dialog between the I and the You or the I and the It. This I has a different position in each of the two types of manipulation. In the first type the I is the subject of manipulation - that is a manipulator. In the second one the I becomes the object of manipulation - thus a victim of a manipulator because the power over the I has been overtaken by other character's consciousness. The I and the You type is represented by an outside dialog (between characters), whereas the I and the It type is demonstrated in an inside dialog which does not occur between the hero and another character but between the hero and a voice of other character's consciousness. The opening part which deals with the manipulation in different contexts (philosophical, political and psychological) is followed by a part where I interpret the manipulation's representation in literature, especially in the works of Dostojevskij (The Double, The Village of Stepanchikovo, Notes from Underground, The Eternal Husband). With the characters of this author we can view the dark side of the human mind and also have a close look at various forms of arbitrariness, especially at the manipulation with the others.
The spelling of loanwords in contemporary daily press
Brožová, Ladislava ; Adam, Robert (advisor) ; Rejzek, Jiří (referee)
The theme of the bachelor's essay is the spelling of the loanwords in today's Czech daily press. The thesis consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The first (theoretical) part informs about the spelling of the loanwords, which was established in 1957. Due to the constant language development the new codification (1993) codified a number of spelling changes, but they were not accepted among the experts nor public respectively. Linguists opened a discussion in which they presented their various opinions. The conclusion was publishing of Dodatek k Pravidlům českého pravopisu. It revised the spelling of the loanwords and is still valid. The crucial amendment was accepting double forms instead of "z" or short vowel only. The second part (practical) examines how the Czech daily press (Mladá fronta DNES, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, Právo and Blesk) reacts to the changes. In what way and how thoroughly do the editors respect the new rules? The aim of this essay(via excerpts from the five aforementioned newspapers) is to present the orthographical standards that prevail in today's newspapers and how has the usage of double forms of z/s, -izmus/-ismus, -ing/-ink affixes, or vowel length changed in the recent years.
