The influence of grinding on the limestone properties

This bachelor thesis deals with dry limestone grinding in the vibratory mill and ball mill. Three different limestone samples were used for milling. Samples were ground in the mills without the addition of surfactants. Several methods of grinding were performed in the vibratory mill. At first, the same weight of limestone samples was ground for different grinding time without any interruption except for one case of grinding with breaks for cooling off the grinding tablet. Another method was grinding of different weights of the same sample. The last one used the same weight of different samples. In the ball mill, sample of one type of limestone was ground for various milling time. The particle size, shape of particles, phase composition and crystallite size were studied for the ground samples. Sieve analysis, laser diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis were used to determine these properties. For each mill, the amount of energy consumed for limestone grinding was calculated.
Heat insulating moulded refractory concretes

The thesis deals with the possibility of specific weight lowering of kaolin suspensions using air-entraining agents. These agents are usually used as concrete admixtures. The goal of the thesis is to verify an alternative possibility of creating porous structure in kaolin suspensions in order to prepare heat insulating moulded refractory concretes without using lightweight fillers. The effect of several air-entraining agents was compared, after that the dosage of agent and mixing conditions were optimized. The stabilization of prepared foams and practical application of selected agents were also part of the thesis.
Meta-talc Application in Inorganic Materials

This thesis is focused at possibilities of preparation and characterization of XRD-amorphous delaminated and dehydroxylated talc phase – meta-talc, which can have its potential application and a starter material for a preparation of magnesium-silicate analogues of geopolymers. Changes in structure and morphology of talc ore were observed during this work. For the purposes of this research, two various talc ores – chloritic and dolomitic were examined. Whole process of meta-talc preparation was examined with whole scale of instrumental techniques such as X-ray diffraction, simultaneous thermogravimetric a differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy or laser analysis of particle size. Meta-talc can be obtained via mechanochemical activation of talc ore with subsequent calcination. Mechanochemical treatment lead to destruction of original crystal structure and breaking of original bonds, i.e. the product of this treatment was almost amorphous and delaminated. Most of hydroxyl groups were converted to molecules of water which remained adsorbed or coordinated in ore structure. These molecules were removed during calcination step.
Inhibition of hydrogen evolution in aluminum-phosphate refractory binders

The thesis deals with the possibilities of inhibition of the reaction of aluminium-phosphate binders with wear iron, which is contained in bauxite. This material is mixed with phosphate binders to form refractories. The hydrogen is produced by this reaction causing the mixture foaming. The amount of evaluated hydrogen was observed by the measuring by the Jank’s calcimeter. Also the shape of oxidation-reduction potential of the binders was measured before and after mixing with aggregate, using potentiometer. The influence of the addition of various cations on the hydrogen evolution and on the oxidation-reduction potential was observed. The effectiveness of the inhibitors was studied also visually by forming test elements.
The optimization of quarried limestone analysis and usage.

Limestones are rocks formed predominantly from the mineral calcite. The Czech Republic is quite rich in this type of rock. Limestone may have a very diverse composition, properties and uses. For this reason, it is beneficial to study and analyze this material, to better utilize it to its full potential. This bachelor thesis deals with the possible uses of limestone from Lesní lom in Líšna in the city of Brno, which consists of two limestones - Hádsko-Ričský and Vilemovický. Limestone analyses were performed using by the following analytical methods: XRF, XRD and ICP-OES. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the preparation of samples for individual analytical methods and the differences of the results obtained by individual methods. Part of the thesis is also an overview of the possible uses of analysed limestones.
