The building at 18, rue Bonaparte: The place of memory and its meaning for the Czechs living in Paris

Diploma thesis "The building at 18, rue Bonaparte: The place of memory and its meaning for the Czechs living in Paris" deals with the theme of everyday life of the Czechs in Paris which is connected with a place that presents a piece of Czech country inside of the historical Paris. This work tries to show the perception of this place on the basis of material, functional and symbolic meaning of this building. As well it treats the overhangs to the migration studies, memory studies and problems of identity. Constituent of the text is also theoretical embodiment of the concept of a place not only in the ethnology but also in others social and humanity sciences - mainly with the regard to the Pierre Nora's theory "places of memory" and Marc Augé's theory "anthropological places". Apart from the symbolical capital of the building at 18, rue Bonaparte which is important place of memory there is presented in the text also history of another places in France which is a part of collective memory of the compatriots up to now. The main goal of this work is to present how important role can play one concrete physical place with strong functional and symbolic meaning for the Czechs living outside of their homeland and how this place can contribute to the process of integration to the hosting society.

Ethnocatering - Traditional food as a way to integration

(anglicky): Migration includes a lot of aspects and a lot of scientific disciplines focus on this. One of these aspects is integration, which we can perceive in this case as integration of immigrants into host country society. Approaches and methods of integration can be different depending on ambiguity of this term. This dissertation is focused on specific example of effort to integrate women immigrants with help of traditional food, which came from the ground of civil association InBáze, o.s. The association developed a project named Ethnocatering which helps to immigrants to become successful on job market via their own experience from gastronomy and it`s supporting itself by social entrepreneurship. Women from different countries of the world then have an opportunity to prepare specialties typical for countries they come from and introduce those to the local society. This essay is focused on immigrants from countries such as South Caucasus - Georgia and Armenia and also on traditional food typical for these countries. Kalmyks and Russia

The presented paper is supposed to be an overviewing study covering the historical development of social formations built up on Kalmyk ethnic background and its relations with Russian state. Taking into consideration, that both Russian state and the Kalmyk ethnic group have undergone significant modifications during its historical development, the paper mainly recourses to diachronic analysis of the topic. Simultaneously with the diachronic approach is also applied the synchronic one, primarily with respect to the strategies of legitimization justifying the participation of the Kalmyk Republic in the Russian Federation. From the methodological viewpoint, the paper is based on short-time stay in Kalmykia, interviews with Kalmyks residing in Prague and Russian bibliography.
Iranian Diaspora in the United States

This dissertation seeks to explore the social reality of Iranians living in the United States. The main objective is to find out how Iranians (Iranian Americans) maintain, construct and perceive their Iranian identity and to identify factors that could intervene in this process. Another aim is to examine intra-diasporic social relations, social interactions with American society and stance towards Iran. To fulfill the purpose of this dissertation, a qualitative research method was applied. The selected qualitative data consisted of thirty-one in-depth interviews with Iranians in New York City and Los Angeles. The results of the research indicated a strong sense of Iranian pride among all respondents, regardless their religious, inner ethnic or generational affiliation. This pride stems from ancient Iranian cultural heritage (and from Pahlavi era that adopted ancient symbolism into its ideological repertoire) and is still kept alive through pre-Islamic symbols and religiously indifferent traditions. It is obvious that the "pure Iranian identity" belongs to the first generation Iranians only, while the 1.5 and second generations, in their self-concept, proved to be rather hyphenated or torn between three spaces (typically young Iranian Jews). The endeavour of Czech countrymen living in Polish Zelów to retain Czech language

The thesis focuses on the effort to preserve Czech language among the Czech inhabitants of a Polish town of Zelow. The initial part of the paper deals with the methodology of my field research. The next part focuses on the main characteristics of the Czech countrymen in Zelow, especially their history, identity, religion and relations with the Polish majority. Vietnamese in Czechia and the World: Migration and Adaptation Tendencies

The PhD thesis 'Vietnamese in Czechia and the world: migration and adaptation tendencies' sheds light on the development of international migration of the Vietnamese since the mid 20th century to the present with special emphasis on Czechia as a country of destination. The main aim is to identify the key factors that initiate international migration of the Vietnamese and how they determine main directions of these movements, affect migrants' and non-migrants' expectations and determine adaptation strategies. In this respect, the methodology of the paper is based on the combination of macro-level and micro-level approaches. Therefore, the thesis brings an analysis of main structural factors encouraging international migration of the Vietnamese such as economic development, economic and political reforms Đổi Mới and pro-emigration policy of the Vietnamese government; and also an analysis of actors' personal interpretations of these factors. The key part of the thesis is also identifying the transformation of importance of these factors depending on the stage of migration and on the socio-economic-political context of migration or migration-decision making. An Impact of Reemigration on National Identity

Introduced diploma thesis presents the results of the research project which investigated the impact on the national identity. The goal of the research project was to find out with a help of the quality research, in detail an anchored theory, the central phenomenon in the perception of the national identity. The results of the anchored theory shows, that this phenomenon is level of adaptation of the individual on the environment respectively level of acculturation and flowingly level of reintegration. Intervene conditions, such as strategy of the handling of the stress situations, work success or family and friends' bounds also influence this phenomenon. Main context line in this direction presents emigration and re-emigration of the individual with all the possible causes and intervene conditions. Important part of the context line is the fact of the leaving of the individual itself, including his or hers preparation for leaving the country. This in its' nature determines even the process of acculturation of the individual in emigration with the impact on the perception of the national identity. The deportation of the Kalmyks to Siberia (1943 - 1957)

Diploma thesis Deportation of the Kalmyk people to Siberia (1943-1957) is devoted to one of the tragic chapters in the history of the Kalmyks, people living in the Lower Volga region in Russia. In the diploma thesis the issue of the Kalmyk deportation in the Soviet Union during World War II is analysed in a broader context. The issue of deportation as a foudation of the thesis is put into a wider context. The concept of deportation and repressive policies was established by a state government in the first half of the 20th century. Deportations were used by the apparatus of government of the Soviet Union as one of the forms of repressive sanctions to regulate conditions in the state. Political, social and economic situation in the first half of the 20th century in Russia was impacted by the Stalinist period. The period of J. V. Stalin's rule over the Soviet Union (1922-1952) was entered into the history of Russia as a period of mass repressions (collectivization, persecution of the kulaks, church dignitaries and political dissenters, the "great terror", deportations on the eve of World War II, total deportations during the World War II).
