Position accuracy assessment of underground water courses in ZABAGED

Positional accuracy assessment of underground water courses in ZABAGED Abstract The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a comprehensive view of underground water courses through the eyes of a topographer and a cartographer with an emphasis on the evaluation of the position representation of this phenomenon. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the detailed introduction to ZABAGED datasets and to the research of other foreign topographic databases with an emphasis on the representation and display of underground water courses on topographic maps of medium and large scale. In the second part of the thesis, there are presented five basic methods of comparison of positional accuracy of lines in geoinformation systems. The practical part of the thesis includes a proposal of typology of underground water courses, as a comprehensive concept of different types of underground water courses, which is used for the correct evaluation of the position accuracy analysis on the selected relevant sample of the underground water courses in ZABAGED in the last part of this work. Keeping linear objects of cycling infrastructure in topographical databases and digital cartography.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is creating of a new methodology of keeping linear objects of cycling infrastructure in the ZABAGED® database. The methodology determines the way of keeping data in the database including attributes, attributes' description and the way of their assignment to appropriate lines. Objects of interest are marked cycling routes and special types of infrastructure which have been designed for cycling (e.g. bicycle trails, traffic lines reserved for cyclists or cycling corridors). Theoretical part is an overview of different types of cycling infrastructure including legislatively-bounding properties (width, marking) and an overview of the methodology of marking cycling routes. Furthermore, there is an overview of existing databases in which cycling infrastructure is already being kept and five of these are further characterised. The practical part comprises creating of a new data layer to evaluate the function of created methodology in covering real-life object's parameters. The created data layer can be found in attachment of this thesis together with its visualisation on a map. Included in the practical part there also is a description of possible problems which occurred during vectorisation and possible solutions or precautions on how to prevent them.

"El sexenio de la guerra" : legitimization of Mexico's drug war in the presidential discourse of Felipe Calderón

The gravity of the problem of drug trafficking in Mexico became clearly visible in the 1990s in connection with the political changes in the country and geopolitical transformations in the region. It became obvious that the drug cartels formed a key part of the system and of the everyday reality. Felipe Calderón, a new president from the PAN party elected in the disputed election of 2006, chose to dedicate his presidency to the fight against organized crime in order to regain legitimacy lost in the electoral process. His open confrontation strategy brought success at first, however, the praise it received was soon replaced by criticism. Negative consequences such as human rights abuses, militarization and ignorance of other problems of the society overcame any possible successes of the military campaign. During the six years of his presidency Calderón strived to obtain support for his strategy by using various legitimization strategies. The aim of the author of this thesis is to introduce some of the existing methods and to show how Mexico's Drug War was legitimized in the context of the strategies within the "call to arms" genre. The authors of these discourses tend to use four generic elements - appeals to a legitimate power source, appeals to history, construction of the "evil other" and calls for unity...

Settling tanks and tailing ponds in topographical databases and digital cartography

SETTLING TANKS AND TAILING PONDS IN TOPOGRAPHICAL DATABASES AND DIGITAL CARTOGRAPHY Abstract The aim of bachelor thesis is to evaluate the way of classification of tailing ponds and settling tanks in topographical database ZABAGED (Czech Fundamental Base of Geographic Data). The first part introduces both phenomena themself, their division and characteristics. Next part is dedicated to detailed review of the literature regarding classification of examined features in czech and also foreign digital topographical databases. An example of representation of features in each database is included. In the practical part, thanks to obtained information, the differences of objects are explained. Furthermore, more appropriate classification of tailing ponds and settling tanks in ZABAGED database is suggested. Keywords: tailing pond, settling tank, digital topographic database, ZABAGED.

Atlas of canoeing marathon Budweis - Prague Abstract The aim of this bachelor thesis is to create an atlas of canoeing marathon Budweis - Prague. The text of thesis then provides a description of making process, including a literature review. The partial goal of this work is to create cartographic point features of boating and nautical themes. The work also includes a description of the Vltava River, history of its navigability and the history of the race Budweis - Prague. The result is completely processed atlas, which introduces users to the course of the track and its surroundings. The atlas is an external attachment to this thesis. Redistricting Bodies and Redistricting Reform in the U.S.: Where Are We Now and the Way Forward

While drawing electoral districts and its special type called gerrymandering (redistricting with a certain purpose in mind) has been present in American politics since the founding of the United States, it has recently received a lot of attention and criticism. Gerrymandering has been accused of ruining electoral competition, contributing to the gridlock in Congress, and hampering the spirit of American democracy. Moreover, legislators responsible for redistricting are frowned upon for choosing their own voters and thus ruining the purpose of the electoral process. Redistricting currently follows certain principles, the most important of which and the only two recognized at the federal level are population equality and minority representation. These principles were designed to limit the redistricting bodies when drawing districts. State legislatures remain the most common redistricting institution. However, for the criticism that they face various redistricting commissions with different powers were established. The current trend in the redistricting reform is to delegate the redistricting power to independent commissions which can adopt a redistricting plan without the consent of a legislature and whose members have no connections to politics.
