Change in the discourse of the League and the Five Star Movement after the 2018 elections in Italy
Vaněček, Vojtěch ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The presented thesis deals with the change of discourse of two populist parties in Italy after the 2018 general elections. It is a comparative study that examines the phenomenon of populism through the example of the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the League (LN). These parties and movements are perceived as populist and are on different sides of the political spectrum on a number of issues. Together, the LN and the M5S formed a governing coalition after the 2018 elections. The aim of this paper is to compare the development and analyse the changes in selected aspects of populism of these entities during the year of joint government. It seeks to determine the position of the LN and the Five Star Movement in the political spectrum, to identify how their policies overlap, with an emphasis on the period of transition from opposition to government
Catalan identity and nationalism from the perspective of Catalan and Spanish political parties between 2014 and 2017
Pěkná, Adéla ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
The period from 2014 to 2017 was marked in Catalonia by many events and tensions surrounding independence issues. This work "Catalan identity and nationalism from the perspective of Catalan and Spanish political parties between 2014 and 2017" aims to find out how identity themes are captured in the programs of political parties across the entire political spectrum in Catalonia, i. e. in the programs of both national and Catalan parties, and whether the processing of these themes leads to a clear interpretation of Catalan identity or problematizes it. The work is based on the interpretation of the nation according to Anthony D. Smith and the national identity derived from it, expanded with linguistic themes and cultural peculiarities of the community of nations according to Eric J. Hobsbawm. The application of thematic analysis on the political proclamations were identified based on the formulation of these parties' national-identity perception of Catalonia. The basic source are the election programs of the Catalan political parties. This work concludes that the themes represented by the national-identity issue in the program of Catalan political parties are language, protection of cultural heritage and territorial identity. However, processing these topics does not lead to a clear interpretation of...
Italian Foreign Policy towards Libya in the Context of Externalization of Migration Control
Přeček, Marek ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
Since approximately the 1990s, the countries of southern Europe have been developing a policy of so-called externalization or transferring responsibility for immigration and asylum procedures and obligations to other countries, in response to the growing waves of immigration. Since the beginning of the century, Italy and Libya have been developing various forms of this cooperation, with dynamic changes based on the internal political situation in both countries. This thesis examines the development of the given policy on the part of Italy after what is probably the biggest qualitative shift in mutual relations, i.e. after the events of the Arab Spring and the change of the Libyan regime. The aim is therefore to analyze the nature and development of the conception of Italian foreign policy towards Libya in the area of migration, from the position of the executive leaders of this policy, i.e. the prime ministers and the ministers of the interior and foreign affairs of the governments of Matteo Renzi, Paolo Gentiloni and Giuseppe Conte (2014-2019). The research question therefore deals with whether the selected Italian governments have continuity in their conception of migration policy with the previous cabinets in the line of securitization and externalization of migration, and we can therefore talk...
European Mobility from the Perspective of European Integration
Šubrt, Michael ; Lukešová, Anna (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the institutional development of European mobility in the European Communities and the European Union. The phenomenon of mobility is understood as freedom of movement for workers, which evolved into the freedom of movement for all European Union citizens. The key research question is formulated as: "Where and when might the origin of the European mobility be found?" and "How has it evolved since?" That makes this thesis a historical case study focused on one particular European policy. To explain the development, this thesis analyses primary sources (e.g. the European legislation) and secondary literature. The historical section is divided into six subchapters, which describe the development in particular periods: before the establishment of the European Economic Community, after the Treaties of Rome, after the Single European Act, after the establishment of the European Union by the Maastricht Treaty, after the Amsterdam Treaty and finally after the Treaty of Lisbon reforms. In the final discussion, the ascertained knowledge is confronted with some of the European integration theories (e.g. the theory of major historical breaks or neofunctionalism).
Great Britain's response to the 1974 Cyprus crisis
Baxová, Amanda ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is concerned with the reaction of Great Britain to the Cyprus crisis in 1974. Using the rational actor model of foreign policy decision-making, the thesis examines why the Great Britain decided not to intervene militarily in Cyprus in 1974. The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the 1974 Cyprus conflict and describes the ways in which the UK played a role in it. The practical part of the thesis analyses British actions in Cyprus, specifically focusing on the alternative of military intervention. The aim of the thesis is to determine what led the British government to decide not to intervene militarily in Cyprus and whether, according to the chosen methodology, they made the right decision.
CJEU as a Political Actor in the Termination of intra-EU BITs: Judicial Activism in Achmea Ruling
Juráš, Jan ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The topic of the role and function of the Court of Justice of the European Union has been the subject of academic debate for quite some time. In recent years, a number of new studies have begun to examine judicial activism, also known as the process of judicialization of EU policy. It is a process by which the Court of Justice not only interprets the law, but directly creates it, thus becoming a full-fledged actor in the legislative and institutional framework of the EU. The work combines the topic of judicial activism with the issue of international investment protection in the EU, in which the Court of Justice of the EU has become a key actor by delivering the termination of intra-EU bilateral investment treaties between EU member states. In its judgment in the Achmea case, the Court of Justice ruled that these treaties are incompatible with the EU law system as investment arbitrations initiated on the basis of these treaties may undermine the autonomous position of the Court of Justice as the only institution that has a competency to interpret EU laws. The thesis also deals with the scale of the judicial activism in the Achmea ruling. Position of the other actors of the EU institutional framework is also presented. The work thus represents an interdisciplinary approach to the research of...
Arguments used in parliamentary debates on Western Balkan European integration in EU member states
Rääk, Ingriin ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
This thesis set out to compare the discourse on possible future European Union enlargement to the Western Balkans in the national parliaments of Estonia, Slovenia, Austria, and Ireland. There is a lack of literature present on arguments for Western Balkan enlargement specifically and especially arguments on member state level. Thus, stenographic minutes were analyzed to fill this research gap. Arguments were divided into five categories: economic, security, containment of third actor influence, democracy promotion and moral. The results showed that the status quo strongly favors enlargement with only two out of the 92 statements analyzed opposing enlargement. Security arguments were most prevalent in all of the parliaments under study with the highest frequency of occurrence in the debates of Austrian and Slovenian parliaments. Interestingly, Irish discourse strongly favored moral arguments whilst Austrian discourse is focused on economic and security arguments. For Slovenia and Estonia, a surprisingly small number of statements were present. For Austria, Slovenia and Ireland, there was a significant increase in the salience of the Western Balkan enlargement topic from 2018 onwards.
Euroregions and INTERREG V-a: A comparative analysis of projects at the Czech-Polish border
Outhierová, Leticie ; Young, Mitchell (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
Euroregions are a popular type of cooperation between sub-state actors in the Czech-Polish border area. However, their impact on regional development is still a subject of debate among academics. This thesis explores if the Euroregions affect how their members use EU funds. For this purpose, the members' and non-members' projects, realized within the framework of the INTERREG V-a program between 2014 and 2020, are compared. They are compared in terms of price, number, and type of participants, specific themes, and general thematic goals. The thesis is narrowed down to bilateral Euroregions at the Czech-Polish border - specifically to the Euroregions Glacensis, Praděd, Silesia, and Cieszyn Silesia. The research also offers a comparison between the four selected Euroregions. The results indicate that members' projects are significantly more expensive and involve a larger number of participants. Differences were also spotted regarding the themes and thematic objectives. In comparison, the members' projects of selected Euroregions also had different characteristics. This thesis inquires whether the distinction between members' and non-projects exists.
Image of the United Kingdom in Russian media in the context of Brexit
Sharkova, Olga ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union was a significant global issue that attracted the attention of experts in politics and international relations, as well as the general public and mass media. Since the Brexit referendum, the world has been focused on the situation in the United Kingdom. Mass media in all countries have covered this event in different ways. Thus, this diploma thesis "Image of the United Kingdom in Russian media in the context of Brexit" examines the image of Great Britain in Russian pro-governmental media Russia Today and opposition media Dozhd. This study is based on a critical discourse analysis of the articles from both sources in the period from June 23, 2016 to 2018. Based on this analysis, the image of the UK in each of these media was subsequently constructed. Particular attention is paid to the coverage of Russian interference in the Brexit referendum through an emotional appeal to British voters using the social network Twitter and disinformation. The image of the United Kingdom in the context of Brexit in opposition and pro-governmental media was then compared to identify how the image of the UK was changing under the circumstances of Russian interference, as well as to determine the views held by these media on Russian interference in the Brexit...
Secessionist movements in the European Union - case study Scotland
Říhová, Sandra ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
The Scottish National Party (SNP) is the party supporting Scottish secession and also Scotland's dominant party, having won every election since 2007. In a situation where the SNP and a significant number of Scots hope for an early repeat of the Scottish independence referendum, this thesis seeks to explore the main themes and definitions of nationalism as conceived by the SNP by applying the method of thematic analysis to SNP election manifestos from the period between 2007 and 2021. Based on this analysis, the thesis identifies three main themes through which the SNP shapes Scottish nationalism. Scottish nationalism as represented by the SNP is reflected in the construction of national identity, the notion of Scottish citizenship based on territory and belonging to the Scottish nation. Scotland defines itself through egalitarianism and community values. The SNP's vision is then of a just society following the party's social democratic ideology, sharing a sense of Scottish culture and global issues. The party's overall political strategy can be seen as a deepening departure from the economic and social status quo within the Union, with independence being a gradual process whereby the Scottish Parliament would continue to grow in power through devolution from Westminster, but at the same time...
