Edward Thomas as a Critic
Zikmund, Jan ; Quinn, Justin (advisor) ; Longley, Edna (referee)
1 Abstract Long overlooked, the poetry of Edward Thomas (1878-1917) has enjoyed wide recognition in the past few decades. The same cannot be said of Thomas's criticism. Though he worked as a literary journalist for almost a decade and a half, critics have mainly focused on the final years of his life when, after the outset of the First World War, he voluntarily enlisted in the Artist's Rifles and began writing poetry. He died in France, at the Battle of Arras. Since his youth, Thomas suffered from depression, possibly made worse by the demands of his profession (some years he reviewed over a hundred books). In contrast, the last stretch of his life seems to have been more fulfilling. Not only did military training prove beneficial for his mental health, but - encouraged by a number of his friends, including Robert Frost and W. H. Hudson - he metamorphosed from overworked hack-writer (as some still refer to him) to outstanding poet. As most of his criticism precedes his poetry, scholars usually look at Thomas's reviews, anthologies, and literary studies to better understand his 144 poems. While it is important to explore the links between his poetry and rest of his work, Thomas's criticism is strong and extensive enough to be considered independently of the poetry. His books and articles may illuminate his...
Curve- fitting of the critical power in swimming for triathletes
Zikmund, Jan ; Kovářová, Lenka (advisor) ; Horčic, Josef (referee)
Tittle: Curve- fitting of the critical power in swimming for triathletes Objectives: Comparison of curve-fitting of the critical power at swimmers and triathletes in different performance categories. Methods: This thesis is based on a research. The research took place in laboratories FTVS UK and there was used the swimming simulator called Biokinetic for test measurements. Elite swimmers, triathletes and hobby triathletes participated in the tests. Sportsmen took part in 4 tests. The first test - 10 crawl strokes, the second test - 20 crawl strokes, the third test - 50 crawl strokes and the fourth test - 200 crawl strokes. The obtained data were worked out by using T-test and they were written into tables and charts in programs Excel and Word. There was used program PASW Statistics 18 for statistical processing. Results: It was discovered, that there were no differences in performances in tests by using Biokinetic between swimmers and triathletes. Hobby triathletes made the same performances as elite triathletes. The biggest difference in performances was at female hobby triathletes, who were worse than female elite triathletes and female swimmers. Thinking Globally: Seamus Heaney and Dennis O'Driscoll
Zikmund, Jan ; Quinn, Justin (advisor) ; Theinová, Daniela (referee)
In 2008, Dennis O'Driscoll published Stepping Stones, a book-length interview with the Irish poet and critic Seamus Heaney. When conducting the interview, O'Driscoll did not take a strictly chronological approach. Instead, he was interested in Heaney's literary influences, as well as his work and views on poetry. O'Driscoll's informed questions reflect his own thinking as both a poet and critic, and rather than playing the role of passive interlocutor, he confronts and challenges Heaney's views. The result is a discussion that is dynamic and revealing, providing insight into the minds of two significant Irish poets. The interview in Stepping Stones forms the basis of my bachelor thesis, which examines the friendship and exchange of influence between Heaney and O'Driscoll, who had known each other since the 1970s and had written essays on similar topics. My thesis focuses on three points of disagreement between Heaney and O'Driscoll: Eastern European poetry, American poetry and literary culture, and the poetry of last things. My aim is to introduce both poets' positions on each subject, and consider how their opposing views influenced each other's thinking on those subjects. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify why O'Driscoll was important to Heaney and explore how both poets influenced each...
