The Development and the Role of International Criminal Justice in Today's World
Permanová, Lucie ; Pulgret, Miroslav (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with international criminal justice, which began to influence international politics during the last twenty years. After the end of the Cold War, a lot of armed conflicts were breaking out. They were accompanied by unprecedented inhuman acts and atrocities. The international community had to find a solution for how to respond to such events. In 1993, the United Nations Security Council acted under Chapter VII of The Charter of the United Nations and decided unanimously upon the establishing of an ad hoc International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. The Tribunal's role was to prosecute persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed during the Balkans conflict. A year later, in 1994, the Security Council decided to establish another ad hoc tribunal - The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which served to punish the architects of Rwandan genocide. Both tribunals sped up negotiations and the decision to establish the permanent International Criminal Court, whose objective is to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. The crime of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and in the future the crime of aggression. Firstly, this thesis analyses the ad...

Harmáčková, Lucie ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
The following master's thesis focuses on the development of the position of Russia towards the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe from 1991 till 2016. The relation is examined in four periods: 1991 - 2000, 2000 - 2008, 2008 - 2012 and 2012 - 2016. Based on the theory of neoclassical realism, I analyse the relative material capabilities of Russia as the independent variable, the intervening variables and the relation of Russia as the dependent variable in each of these four periods. The thesis is elaborated as a qualitative case study while the congruence method serves as the main method for comparing the variables.
State-building and developing governance capacity in East Timor
Šestáková, Michaela ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
This diploma thesis elaborates on state-building in the form of a case study of East Timor. East Timor has hosted an international state-building intervention as a result of the lack of governance capacity. East Timor is not the first case of a failed state with implied international state-building, but applied transitional administration in this format is unique. The United Nations established UNTAET with a finite time period which has been prolonged twice since May 2002. This thesis examines international state-building and its linkage with local participation and ownership. The goal of the thesis is to determine whether the peace-building in East Timor was successful. It continues with the second research question regarding the main aspects of state-building which helped to enhance performance in governance and public administration areas. Using Fukuyama's theoretical background, this thesis builds a hypothesis on the notion, that aspects which helped enhance performance are those connected with local participation and ownership. The method of the research is process tracing between autumn 1999 to May 2002, when the independent state of Timor-Leste was established. Although UNTAET was successful in creating institutional and process bases in areas of governance and public administration, local...
Delegitimization of the West in Al Qaeda's Magazine Inspire
Brzá, Magdaléna ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
The Master's thesis Delegitimization of the west in Al Qaeda's Magazine Inspire focuses on the techniques of terrorist group's propaganda aimed at individuals of Arab descent and Islam faith residing in one of the western countries. Thesis analyses sixteen issues of digital magazine Inspire published since 2010 by Al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen called AQAP - Al Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula. Terrorist attacks by so called lone-wolfs on the territory of western states have had increasing tendency in the last decade. The phenomenon of online propaganda and radicalisation through social networks is progressively becoming one of the major challenges for western security services. Grasping the sociological and psychological aspects of lone wolfs' drivers for conducting terrorist attacks is thus crucial. The underpinning theory of the thesis is framing analysis together with the concept of delegitimization. Thesis traces the production and use of five framing tools - metaphor, catchphrases, depiction, exemplars and visual images (which are the combination of studies done by Fairhurst & Sarr and Gamson & Modigliani 1989). Second part of the thesis links the framing tools with three stages of the delegitimization of the west - a crisis of confidence, a conflict of legitimacy and a crisis of legitimacy. The...
The Influence of Ownership Structures on Socio-Ecological Conflicts in the Peruvian Mining Sector
Nentwig, Stefan Jan Benedikt ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
I The analysis of ownership structures as aspect in the relationship of natural resources and intrastate conflicts is a relatively new field of study. This thesis contributes to this debate, by analyzing the case of Peru with its specific socio-environmental conflicts. Based on comprehensive literature, a logistic regression model will be applied in order to account for the specific effects of different patterns of ownership. With the distinction between local and national private actors, a new approach is offered. The results suggest that local ownership significantly decreases the likelihood of civil conflict, while foreign ownership increases it. However both statistical evidence and the conducted case study of the La Bambas mine suggest, that the relationship is more complex than originally expected.
Specifics of Data Warehouse enhancement in a bank
Karásek, Tomáš ; Pour, Jan (advisor) ; Hylmarová, Lenka (referee)
The present thesis deals with the specifics of Data Warehouse enhancement in a bank. The aim of the thesis is a definition of the general specifics of banks, their Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse enhancement compared to other companies. The thesis is divided into seven parts. The first part describes the theoretical basis of banking and Business Intelligence. The second part defines the general specifics of banks and their informatics compared to other companies. Then Business Intelligence in a bank, its architecture and enhancement are explored. In the fourth part a conceptual data model of Data Warehouse in a bank is introduced and described in detail. Afterwards the main source systems of Data Warehouse are identified and matched to the subject areas of the data model. The sixth part discovers important application areas of Business Intelligence usage and mentions the basic indicators. The last part presents a case study (a project of Data Warehouse enhancement in a bank). Comparison of object-oriented and object-relational data model as persistence layer in Java
Karásek, Tomáš ; Palovská, Helena (advisor) ; Pavlíčková, Jarmila (referee)
The aim of the present bachelor's thesis is comparison of representatives of object-oriented data model and object-relational data model and suitability their use as persistence layer in Java application. The first part of this thesis focuses on overview of object-oriented data model and object-relational data model, their theoretical basis, characteristic features, historical development and their representatives. Then possibilities of storing permanent data in Java application, examples of standard Java APIs, their advantages and areas of use are explored. Another part is concentrated on demonstration of database management systems Oracle and objectDB, comparison of their functionality, easiness of use with databases and connection with Java database application. Afterwards accessibility of documentations and the code length of both solutions are compared. In conclusion of this part discovered facts are summarized and recommendations for choice of data model are determined. Clearly arranged comparison of representatives of object-oriented and object-relational database management systems and determination of more convenient database for connection with Java application is the result of this bachelor's thesis.
Samojízdné stroje a sklízeče v rostlinné výrobě
Karásek, Tomáš
This thesis gives an overview about self-moving machines and harvesting machines currently used in vegetable production. It mainly focuses on self-moving machines for harvesting of cereals and fodder crops. It focuses only marginally on machines for chemical protection and crops' fertilisation and machines for harvesting of root crops and special crops. History, development and individual functional parts are described at chosen self-moving machines. It deals in detail with possibilities of using of different types of adapters for self-moving threshing machine and self-moving cutting machine. Self-moving threshing machines were chosen for technical and technical-economic evaluation.
