Dealing with the Communist Past: Transformation of History Education in Czech Republic after 1989

The thesis aims to stimulate the debate on the need of improvement of the history education in the Czech Republic. It concentrates on describing the consequences of current historical situation, defined by the dealing with the communist past discourse, to history education. First, it analyses the very concept of dealing with the communist past, using available linguistic and statistic tools (e.g. Czech National Corpus and Mediasearch archive) and multidisciplinary literature. Then the three studies follow. The first case study explores the public debates on teaching of communist history that took place in the public since 1989 and included some criticism of the quality of history education. It also analyses conceptualizations of history education within the national curriculum since 1989. As a result, two dominant discursive types that have had an influence on the public debate about history education and teaching practice are defined. The second study explores the memory, pedagogical and discursive practices related to the application of oral history method for both remembrance and history education. Czechs and Germans in the Polička's Region in the 20th Century: Regional Probe Into Czech-German Coexistence in the Ethnically Mixed District of Polička

Using a method of regional probing, the thesis seeks to map the evolution of relations between the Czech majority and the German minority that resided in the former political district of Policka. The analysis concentrates on the period of 1897-1946, with a concentration focusing on the culture of remembering and the ways in which both ethnic groups came to divergent interpretations of their mutually-shared history. The author strives to identify the factors that influneced the actions and positions of the local populace during the key political events of 1918, 1938 and 1945. He concentrates not only on the everday interactions between both ethnic groups, but also on the conditions that both groups found themelves in during the so-called national confrontation.

Transfer of Germans from Polička's region 1945-1947

The Bachelor Thesis "Resettlement of Germans from Polička's region between 1945-1947" maps the process of expulsion of the Sudeten-German population from the area of former Polička district after the Second World War. The author strives to describe the wider circumstances of the event commonly referred to as »resettlement«. Therefore the thesis includes the description of the security situation in the region and the activities of the District National Committee (Okresní národní výbor) in Polička in 1945. The author's effort focused on political and national development in the multinational Polička area with regard to those factors that affected the attitude of local people towards the Germans after 1945. The main contribution of the thesis is the description of the course and circumstances of the resettlement of more than 2000 Germans in July 1945. The author draws attention to the preparation of the resettlement by the Pardubice regional branch of the Settlement Office in Prague (Osídlovací úřad v Praze) and the transports that were set out from Polička region to the detention camps located in the districts of Havlíčkův Brod and Lanškroun. Considering the multinational character of the monitored area great attention was paid to the situation of mixed marriages.
