Analysis of the residential mobility of the young people in Prague's hinterland
Dušek, Petr ; Špačková, Petra (advisor) ; Šimon, Martin (referee)
Analysis of the residential mobility of the young people in Prague's hinterland Abstract This thesis deals with the residential mobility of the young people aged 17-29 in Prague's hinterland. The main aim of this study is to evaluate present and expected future rate of the migration mobility with an emphasis on the migration behavior analysis, chiefly regarding the attitudes and motives of the young people towards prospective move in future. Another aim is to identify groups of the young people with different attitudes to move. First part of the thesis is devoted to the discussion of relevant theoretical approaches. Next chapter introduces applied methods of research: the analysis of statistical data and the semi-structured interview. Empirical part of this study analyses development of migration in Prague's hinterland. The main chapter of the study investigates key factors, which play a role in the process of residential mobility of the young people. Keywords: suburbanization, residential mobility, young people, Prague metropolitan region, interview
Counterurbanisation: rhythms, identities, homes
Šimon, Martin
8 Abstract Counterurbanisation research, which is a central topic of this thesis, represents an appropriate field where transformations of contemporary societies and their socio- spatial organization can be examined. The dynamics of social and societal changes creates a demand for developing new methods and tools which helps us to understand contemporary change. Counterurbanisation is a multi-faceted concept which has been controversial since its initial use. An introduction of the concept of counterurbanisation in the field of population geography provoked a general debate on new and emerging trends in development of settlement system. Different logics of concentration and deconcentration of human activities has been challenged. Counterurbanisation operationalized as a migration poses a challenge for many standard conceptualizations of migration. The logic of non-economically motivated migration from the centre to the periphery requires a search for alternative explanatory mechanisms. Impact assessment and the impact of counterurbanisation in rural communities are analogous to the classical social science studies evaluating the integration of immigrants from rural areas in the cities. The thesis is composed of two basic sections. The first section presents a broader theoretical and methodological...
School as an Integration Partner. Interim research report.
Leontiyeva, Yana ; Mikešová, Renáta ; Tollarová, Blanka ; Šimon, Martin ; Čermáková, Dita
The interim research report is a summary of the findings of the School as an Integration Partner project, which deals with the integration of migrant background pupils (non-native language speakers) in Prague's primary schools. The first part of the report deals with the analysis of available statistical data, analysis of previous research and other sources of information on pupils with migrant background. The second part summarizes the findings from an extensive research at primary schools in Prague conducted within the project in the school year 2019-2020 and focused on the situation of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as a language of instruction. The research focused on finding out the number of these pupils at individual primary schools in Prague including the estimation of their language skills. The research also focused on the use of individual support measures by schools, on financing support of migrant background pupils and on the existence of teachers specialized in teaching Czech as a foreign language.
The spatial analysis of the 2018 Czech presidential election results in the capital city of Prague
Vratný, Radek ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Šimon, Martin (referee)
The 2018 Czech presidential election were profoundly controversial and polarising event. One of the polarising factors was a perception that the voting behaviour in the capital city of Prague is significantly different compared to the voting behaviour in the rest of Czechia. Therefore, the primary objective of this thesis is to examine the electoral support of both runoff voting candidates across the territory of the capital city of Prague. The main part of the analysis focuses on the spatial differentiation of the election results of both candidates at the level of Prague's polling districts and on searching for the spatial clusters of electoral support. For the purpose of the study the methods of the exploratory spatial data analysis were used, specifically the global and local statistics of spatial autocorrelation. Subsequently, the thesis attempts to clarify which factors determined the voting behaviour through testing the socio-economic and demographic indicators using the method of multinomial linear regression. The analysis proved that the spatial differentiation of the election results of both candidates is significant across the territory of Prague and detected the spatial clusters of electoral support. The analysis also clarified that this voting behaviour can be explained particularly by...
Public presentation of Street Crime Data - Solution Proposal for Czech Cities
Šimon, Martin ; Jíchová, J.
The aim of this paper is to present a proposal for the public presentation of street crime data suitable for Czech cities. In the first part, the article review current research on street-level crime analyses in scholarly literature. We know from research by Weisburd (2015) and others that if we analyse spatial patterns of crime on micro-level, a half of the crime is concentrated in only five percent of street segments. In general, this conclusion is valid largely also in Czech cities and it has implications for policing and crime prevention. Current projects visualising 187 crime in space such as www.mapakriminality.cz260 present only data aggregated for large spatial units. Such projects are useful to initiate a public discussion in the first place, but they tend to create misconceptions about the actual spatial distribution of crime in cities. Crime statistics using large spatial units (OOPs, MOPs, districts) provide solid information about macro-regional patterns of crime, but they inevitably and falsely imply that a crime occurs somehow evenly within these large spatial units. Citizens do not have any detailed information about the real distribution of crime in Czechia and tend to fear or act in their lives according to highly biased media representation of crime. A possible solution to this problem is creation of a corrected Street Crime Index based on a multi-year series of crime data that would provide a realistic picture of crime in the territory, but at the same time allow sufficient spatial anonymization of data.
Activity of urban movements in Prague - case study of Prague 8
Moravcová, Ivana ; Šimon, Martin (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
Urban movements are defined as groups of citizens that try to emphasize urban problems. Originally urban movements in reference to Manuel Castells addressed issues arising from the collective consumption and uneven accumulation of capital to government. The interest of current urban movements is broader. They focus on topics as quality of urban life, accessibility of urban spaces and urban infrastructure and policy making process. The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe urban movements in the context of civic society in Prague. The thesis focuses on the origin, activities, topics and relations of urban movements. The case study focuses on urban movements participating on three topics in city district Prague 8 (eco-centre Trojský vrch, Invalidovna in Karlín and Libeňský most). Semi- structured interviews were conducted with representatives of involved urban movements and selected local politicians. Results of the research imply that Czech urban movements actively influence neighbourhoods. Activities of urban movements are affected by the members' relation to the locality, but also by the territorial scope of movements. Actions of the current urban movements are linked to new possibilities of ICT; the movement works with the community of social network users and uses the shared information...

Changes of socio-spatial structure of the city of Kladno during the post-socialist transformation
Slavíček, Martin ; Mareš, Josef (advisor) ; Šimon, Martin (referee)
After the change of political regime in the Czech Republic in 1989, the increasing population differentiation in the income levels and prices in housing market has occurred, as well as selective population mobility. This thesis analyses evaluates and compares the changes of socio-spatial structure of the city of Kladno in the post-socialist transformation period with emphasis on housing estates, which position in the city in terms of social status of the population are expected to decrease gradually. For achieving the goal the quantitative methods were used to analyse the Census data from 1991, 2001 and 2011 at the urban district level. The work is based on the concepts of socialist and post-socialist city.
