První kapitola poskytuje čtenáři základní informace o společensko-historickém pozadí 1. poloviny 19. století v Rakousku, tedy o době vzniku interpretovaných her. The central theme of this dissertation is the leitmotif of split personalities in Franz Grillparzer´s dramas. Because of the strict censorship are they set in ancient times. These dramas are Sappho, Das goldene Vlie? and Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen. The first chapter gives the reader basic information about social-historical background in the first half of 19 century in Austria - the time of these dramas genesis.
