Jan Palacký (1830-1908) byl prvním docentem geografie na pražské univerzitě a po jejím rozdělení také prvním profesorem geografie na české Karlo-Ferdinandově universitě. Jeho vědecká činnost trvala více než padesát let. Byl známý i v zahraničí a vzorným způsobem tak reprezentoval České království. Jeho rodina byla jednou z nejvýznamnějších rodin české historie. Jan Palacký nebyl tolik úspěšným politikem - jako jeho otec František Palacký či švagr František Ladislav Rieger. Také nedokázal udržet rodinný majetek, o který přišel následkem neúspěšných chabrusových voleb roku 1872. Cílem předkládané práce je zmapovat život Jana Palackého v jeho životních rolích. Díky použití dosud nevyužívaných pramenů poukázat na Palackého osobní národnostní identitu. Těžištěm práce je analýza archivních pramenů vztahujících se k Janu Palackému. Práce je zaměřena na Palackého rodinný život, jeho vědecké působení a působení na univerzitě, osvětovou a dobročinnou činnost. Upozorňuje též na obsáhlou vědeckou korespondenci uloženou v Literárním archivu Památníku národního písemnictví. He worked as a scientist for more than fifty years. He was well known abroad and represented the Czech Kingdom in a perfect way. His family was one of the most important families of Czech history. Jan Palacký was not as successful a politician - as his father František Palacký or his brother-in-law František Ladislav Rieger. He could not keep the family property which he lost as a result of the failed Chabrus elections in 1872. The aim of this thesis is to map the life of Jan Palacký in his life roles through this new perspective and using unused sources to point out Palacký's personal national identity. The focus of the thesis is the analysis of sources relating to Jan Palacký. The thesis is focused on Palacký family life, his scientific work and activities at the university, educational and charitable activities. The thesis also draws attention to the extensive scientific correspondence stored in the Literary archive of the Museum of Czech literature.
