Využití referenčních materiálů v laboratorní medicíně má svá specifika. Vyšší stupeň regulace v této oblasti daný existencí směrnice EU IVD MD 98/79/EC přímo ukládá, aby návaznost hodnot kalibrátorů či kontrolních materiálů byla zajištěna stanoveným referenčním měřicím postupem nebo dostupným referenčním materiálem vyššího stupně. Development on categorization and nomenclature of reference materials is discussed in relation to new ISO Guides and EU directive IVD MD.
