Abstract: This study explores the competencies and perceptions of teachers teaching students with special needs in the primary mainstream and special schools. The study mainly focused on the four sub-scales competencies: teaching and teaching strategies, adaptation of curriculum, classroom management, assessments and on the perceptions of teachers teaching students with special needs. A total of 111 teachers from mainstream and special schools participated in this study. The competencies of teachers were examined using self-completion questionnaires followed by semi-structured interview in which 3 teachers each from mainstream and special schools were involved.
