The Narratives about Jesus' Healing of the Deaf and Blind in the Synoptic Gospels

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of healing in the synoptic gospels. Illness and the suffering associated with it is a phenomenon that everyone encounters throughout their lives. We can look at illness and suffering from many different angles, and many scientific disciplines are studying this phenomenon. In my work, attention is focused on the meaning, meaning and perception of the disease from a human and theological point of view. The starting point of the work are excerpts from the synoptic gospels, which deal with the disease and the miraculous healing of the diseases of the human senses. Pericopes are divided according to the types of sensory impairments. Biblical events give us inspiration on how to perceive different life situations in accordance with God's purpose. These are model situations from which we draw lessons and inspiration in our life story. The introduction introduces the concepts of sin, suffering and illness from the perspective of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The next treatise then provides a view of the healing of the sick as a confirmation of the divinity of Jesus and the authenticity of Jesus' teaching. Ethical aspects in the New Year's speeches by Vaclav Havel

The thesis "Ethical aspects in the New Year's speeches by Vaclav Havel" interprets and evaluates the content of the New Year's speeches by President Havel in the light of civil and political ethics. In the study part first deals with the theoretical background (the areas of ethical consideration; relationship of ethics, politics, freedom) and also represents Havel`s ethical and philosophical dimension (the philosophical roots and sources of inspiration - the ideas, personalities). The core of thesis analyzes the ethical content and the development of the main ideas New Year's speeches, as well as their contribution to value creation on the road to moral autonomy and a more mature political culture. From the perspective of a new relation and in the context of the former regime, the last chapter reflects on Havel's considerations of ethical topics that are necessary for meaningful functioning of person in society with regard to civil and political ethos. PhDr. Mireia Ryšková, Dr. theol. Praha 2019 2 Abstract The thesis deals with the topic of the fear in synoptic gospels. Fear is a phenomenon that affects every person and is subject of interest to several scientific disciplines. This thesis is focusing on fear as an emotion. The selection of gospel excerpts is narrowed to those containing call to overcome fear. The pericopes are categorized according to situations causing fear: fear of the future, fear of people, fear of tasks' difficulty, fear during miraculous apparitions, fear of death, and fear of apocalyptic dreads. The last topic of the thesis are general calls to overcome fear. The reactions of the biblical personalities are diverse and can be viewed as model attitudes inspiring modern society. In the introduction, the topic of fear is briefly characterized in perspective of psychology, philosophy and theology. The focus of the thesis is the exegesis of selected pericopes, thematically sorted into seven chapters ending with short recapitulations of the main ideas. After the generalizing conclusion, an overlap into spiritual life is suggested.

The Themes of Courage and Death in the Anglo-Saxon Epic Beowulf

This thesis analyses and interprets the famous Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf with regard to two main topics of the medieval epic poetry: the topics of courage and death. Theoretical background contains a description of medieval epic poetry and its functions. Furthermore, the introduction contains a description of English medieval epic poetry in historical and religious context (perception of death and afterlife with regard to the mixture of paganism and Christianity, meaning of heroism and heroic virtues - loyalty, pride, honour, persistency, determination, suppression of fear, willingness to help, sacrifice). Another chapter focuses on the creation of Beowulf itself and on the content and the form. The analysis draws on the Czech translation by J. Čermák. It focuses on the hero of the poem and it tries to find particular examples of the above mentioned virtues in three important passages of the poem (the fights with Grendel, with his mother and with the dragon). Another section deals with the image of death (the topics of burial, fateful disasters connected with monsters, fights), the question of afterlife, and with the function of the cyclic structure of epic poems (the never ending cycle of life and death) The thesis also tries to interpret the literary influence of the poem and its topicality.

Courage in Nicolae Steinhardt's life and theology

This dissertation explores the topic of courage in Nicolae Steinhardt's life and theology. Nicolae Steinhardt (1912-1989) was a Jewish-born intellectual who converted to Orthodoxy as a political prisoner in Communist Romania, to then later become a monk. In the beginning I introduce the topic, motivation and structure of this dissertation, which analyses courage as experience and virtue. In the first chapter I present the author, his context, life journey, work and its reception. In the second chapter I focus on the topic of courage as a virtue in Steinhardt's work and theology and I review it from multiple perspectives. The last chapter concludes the analysis by assessing the relevance of Steinhardt's contribution to today's context.

Analysis of the Biblical Trust in the World of Pentateuch

This Study elaborates the topic of Biblical Trust in the World of Pentateuch. This trust is understood as to rely in a purely subjective way on a word or instruction of some person. In case of God it frequently means a conviction that some humanly unrealizable promises are to be fulfilled. Such attitude secures to the trusting person merits before God. Rely on God is often understood in a confrontational way as opposite to the life of unbelievers. Trust requires courage to make leap in the dark. Meanwhile it is always right to trust in God, trust in a human person is in Pentateuch interpreted as fool. But if the respective man is the spokesman of God, the eventual mistrust is seen as an attack against God himself. In case of God's revelation trust becomes duty. If there is any doubt people can ask some sign of authenticity for the presented God's will. But if the will is known, eventual mistrust is interpreted as disobedience and follows a severe punishment. The same trust which belongs to God is required also for his prophet and for the Law proclaimed in the God's name. If somebody relies on himself in sense of exaggerated self-confidence which does not count on God, it is understood as a crime. In the same manner is valuated the trust directed towards the pagan divinities.
