The Libraries and Reader's Reception in the Early Humanism Period in Bohemia

The dissertation looks into the book culture, book production and readership in the kingdom of Bohemia in early humanism. It explores the conditions of rise and reception of book printing in the kingdom of Bohemia. The mind-set of the Utraquist society, resistant to the influence from abroad, international isolation of the Utraquist Bohemia and the previous insignificant manuscript production proved to be the factors which failed to encourage the arrival of book printing in the country. The initial advancement of book printing was hesitant and could not to keep up with the more developed trade abroad. The Czech printing production related to the efforts of reformation to further enhance the moral status of the society soon turned to disseminating literature in the vernacular, yet often they were translated literature. The early Czech printed production however was affected by low quality and quantity of prints and was not of the significance declared by the previous generations of researchers. Personalities of the Catholic society were more inclusive about new ideas from abroad. In the contemporary society the Catholics were therefore the first ones to embrace book printing and also they were quicker in reception of humanism. Ilustrator Virgil Solis Jr. In the service of czech printed Book

This diploma thesis explores the life and the work of the painter and illustrator Virgil Solis Junior (1551 - 1617?). Virgil Solis Junior was the son of the renowned German graphic artist Virgil Solis Senior. In 1567 Solis Junior came to Prague. Firstly, the thesis provides information about Solis's life and position among visual artists in Prague of the time. Further, it describes his potential professional involvement at the court of the Emperor Rudolf II. Virgil Solis was also an illustrator. Drawing from literature published so far, it seems that his only illustrated book was Diadochos, printed in 1602. This thesis, however, supposes that Solis worked on other illustrations during his stay in Prague. It explores and compares various woodcuts from the 16th and 17th centuries and thus compiles a list of printed volumes where Virgil Solis was the author of drawings or woodcuts. This thesis brings an interesting insight into the life of an artist living and working in the Prague of Rudolf II.

Contribution of The Tschammer Library in Cieszyn for Retrospective National Bibliography

The subject of my thesis is the bibliographic processing of the collection of old Czech prints published until 1800 preserved in the Tschammer Library in Cieszyn. The aim is a compilation of bibliographical inventory of preserved editions to give an answer to three research questions. First question is: can a revision of former research results bring something new from the perspective of the national retrospective bibliography? Than whether and how the results of the analysis of the Czech historical collection of specifically local church library can extend the existing knowledge in the research of the history of book culture in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia? Finally, what does the analysis of the provenance of preserved copies held in the Tschammer Library bring to the history of readers, reading and book culture in the Czech lands? The introductory chapter is devoted to the development of evangelical community of Cieszyn Silesia from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century. The second chapter presents the history of the library and the basic characteristics of its historical collections. The third chapter focuses on the results of my bibliographic research. Book culture at the time of the Hussite Revolution (1419-1437)

This bachelor thesis summarizes the knowledge about the bookculture at the time of the Hussite Revolution (1419-1437) based on the study of existing literature. The first part concisely introduces the historical context, the second part is focused on the transformation of literary genre during the Hussite times and also on the material aspect of the book. The analytic second part is focused on the connection the material aspect of the book with the literary genre. The thesis is also based on the comparison of the group of specific codices particularly in their codicological and paleographic aspects.

Humanism and the Renaissance in Czech Print Culture

The present PhD thesis examines the reception of Humanism and the Renaissance in Czech print culture between 1476 and 1547. Critically, it opposes the predominant interpretation line that - from National Revival to post-war marxist literary criticism - tried to preserve at all costs a magnificent picture of the 16th century as a "golden age". The study is based on Petr Voit's recent works on Czech book printing of the first half of the 16th century and follows the reception of Humanism and the Renaissance from a complex point of view (printers' profiles, typography, illustrations and ornaments, readers' reception). The analysis shows that during the period under review, the Czech society, which predominantly professed a reformed confession (utraquism, lutheranism, the Unity of Brethren...), lived in a self-centered religious messianism, and therefore rejected any cultural novelties, especially those coming from Italy as the hometown of the hated papacy. Book printing largely reflected the conservatism and moral rigorism of this mainly utraquist society that ignored the entertainment literature, considered unnecessary or even undesirable. Nuremberg woodblock printings of Erhard Schön in Olomouc and Skalice (16th -20th century)

The thesis is monitored a movement of woodblock printings of graphic Erhard Schön from Nuremberg to Morava. And then the movement to Prostějov, Olomouc and later to Skalice where they were used until the 19th century. These woodcuts were created during the 1620s and they were taken by the printer Jan Günther in the 1640s. Thesis briefly presented a chapbook, its history of development and splitting. This thesis clarifies a historical connections between printer offices in the above mentioned cities. Special focus on pilgrimage woodblock printings Aesop's fables between the printer offices in Prostějov, Olomouc and Skalice from 16th to 20th century.

Biography and Works of Printer and Wood-Cutter Michael Peterle (†1588)

Thesis about life and work of a printer and a woodcutter Michael Peterle is focused mainly on his assumed woodcutting activity (he was active between years 1562-1588). It is based on following assumption: although Michael Peterle did not sign his woodcuts, he illustrated portion of his prints. His printing office produced multitude of topical compositions and some interesting illustrated books. Photodocumentation and description of woodcutting illustrations and decoration (according to Soupis tisků Michaela Peterla staršího a jeho nástupců by Pravoslav Kneidl and more recent sources) was created during writing of this thesis. Attention was also focused on context of usage of illustrations. Afterwards Illustrations and decoration of Peterle's competition in the Czech Republic and Germany were examined. Conducted research showed, that Michael Peterle was not woodcutter, but only a colorist and a printer. This thesis provides another view on printing production in the second half of the 16th century. The Castle Library of Mladá Vožice

(in English): The aim of this dissertation is arranging of the library fund of zámecká knihovna Mladá Vožice. The main purpose of this paper is to define this fund with respect to the provenience and its content. Contemporary conditions of the library are outlined in the Introduction. In the following chapters the history of the castle as well as the history of the noble families involved in establishing of this collection is being described. The main emphasis lays on the family of the collections founders -the family of Küenburg. Fourth chapter describes history of the library on the basis of provenance research. In accordance with this is the identification of the books owners from Küenberg, Spiegefeld and Schönfeld family. In the same manner different families and persons with no direct lineage to Küenbergs are characterized. At the same time this part of the work engages the characteristics of the fund in respect to particular members and partially also including the content characteristics, which are being elaborated properly by means of thematic groups in the following chapter. The information about arrangement of the fund are mentioned on the basis of the archive material and sources. Conclusion is made as a summary of the work, including the overview of its aims and achieved results.
